Pain in my ankle while running?

I noticed for the past few years that while I run, I get a pain in the right side of my ankle, even if I stretch it. I don't know why, it's really bad. It feels more like a cramp more than anything. I think it might be from my shoes; I dont have running shoes yet, I'm using converse. Could this be it? What should I do to help it if it's not?

The only ay to find out for sure is to get fitted for a decent pair of running shoes (If you're talking about the converse all stars......don't run in those).
For the immediate problem, ice the affected area and rest it (Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation). Acute pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong.0 -
when you run do yo land on your heel, mid foot or ball?
If you are running in Converse and heel striking that is not good.
Conventional wisdom would say: Get to a running shop and get gait analysed, then buy a pair of proper running shoes. Alternatively you could investigate Chi or barefoot running techniques (for which your converse shoes may well be OK).
Either way, if you are getting pain on running you need to reduce or stop running until you have identified the issue and done something to rectify: it will not go away on it's own, it may even get worse.

For me I occasionally get this pain along the top/inside of my foot from the toe to the ankle and sometimes a little past. It feels like a tendon or something and it hurts to flex and point my foot or massage it. Is that similar to yours? I never had the problem running barefoot but it started when I used crocs. It must be the footwear. And it takes weeks to go away Google didn't help either, I couldn't find anything and I considered going to my doctor for it, but then it disappeared again.0

Hi I started running not long ago in completely the wrong shoes. I started feeling pain in my foot and toes, and eventually went to a running store and got proper running shoes fitted. Best thing I ever did. If you you are going to run seriously, it is worth investing in proper shoes. Also get a size bigger that your normal everyday shoes, as your feet swell when you run, causing blisters and foot pain.
This is the stuff I learnt by getting it wrong in the beginning. Hope this helps. xx :flowerforyou:0
