Meb Keflezighi became the first American to win the New York Marathon, finishing in a personal best time of 2:09:15. He beat 4-time Boston Marathon and past New York Marathon winner Robert Cheruiyot by making a strong surge between miles 23 and 24 and holding on to win by some 40 seconds.

This years NYM was also the US Men's marathon championship, resulting in a strong field that saw US men place 6 runners in the top 10.

Although he set a still-standing American record in the 10,000 meters in 2001, Keflezighi, born in Eritrea, first came to Americans' attention when he won the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic marathon. Injuries hindered his 2008 Olympic performance, but he recovered and has been running injury free this year, culminating in today's winning performance.

That's one for the history books my friend. Amazing finish and what a day for US marathon runners. Reminds me of when Khalid Khannouchi won Chicago in 99 with a WR performance for the US.

    MEB, what a day.
