Salt Shakers

One of my guilty pleasures is shaking salt on one meal.
I was looking for a way to track Salt Shaker intake. My apologies if it has been covered.
I came across a factoid today that indicated that from a standard 5 Hole Salt Shaker, it takes 60 shakes to get 1 teaspoon (approx. your daily limit?) Not that anyone would try to get there, after counting all other salt intake on MFP.
My salt shaker has 5 holes (add that to my "I didn't know that" learning curve).
I tried it, at my gravity drizzle/tap tap, I got 84 shakes to fill a measuring spoon to 1 tsp. That is a lot of salt.
Having said that, if you take 60 shakes on merit, then to count each shake you would (rounding up from 0.0166) type in a count to 0.020 of a Serving X 1 Teaspoon per Serving, which I believe is 39mg each shake.
The issue would be to do the math of shakes first.
For five days, I actually counted the shakes...I averaged 5 shakes at dinner or (rounding up to 250mg) which when counted, was still within my limit.
To actually do it right I do the math on a calculator (5 shakes X 0.020) = 0.100 X One Teaspoon Serving into MFP = 250mg of sodium.
How many shakes can you get? Does 39mg a shake sound about right?
Assuming, if you want to count the salt from a salt shaker, rather than give it up? Thanks.

Why don't you just use a teaspoon to measure?0

Why don't you just use a teaspoon to measure?
Because no one wants a whole teaspoon of salt on their dinner : )0 -
2325 mg sodium in 1 teaspoon of salt.
2300 divided by 60 shakes = 38.75 mg per shake.
5 shakes x 38.75 mg per shake = 193.75 mg per 5 shakes
I would round that up to 200 mg of sodium per 5 shakes for some fudge-factor and call it done.0 -
I rarely salt my food, but when I do, it isn't from a shaker - it's sea salt with a grinder on top - three or four turns and I'm good.0

How many turns per teaspoon? LOL! I have grinders as well!0 -

I'm guessing here - about a dozen.0 -

Elaine, I'm going to grind out a teaspoon tomorrow and I'll post it here. Inquiring minds want to know!0 -
I recently started using the salt shaker or salt grinder. Hearing that we had way too much sodium in our diets made me afraid to salt my food but I read that only 5%- 15% actually comes from using the salt shaker.
So after 20 years, SALT is back in my diet!
"75% of all the sodium we consume in a day comes from food we don’t prepare at home. In contrast, only about 5% to 6% of salt is added during cooking, and an equal amount is added from the shaker at the table."
The 10 food items that contain the most salt:
1- Bread and rolls, 7.4%
2- Cold cuts/cured meats, 5.1%
3- Pizza, 4.9%
4 -Fresh and processed poultry, 4.5%
5 -Soups, 4.3%
6 -Sandwiches like cheeseburgers, 4%
7- Cheese, 3.8%
8- Pasta dishes like spaghetti with meat sauce, 3.3%
9- Meat dishes like meatloaf with tomato sauce, 3.2%
10- Snacks, including chips, pretzels, popcorn and puffs, 3.1%

Try shaking it into your palm and then measuring it.0

I turned my grinder 12 times to get 1 teaspoon of salt, BUT if would definitely depend on how coarse or fine you have the grinder set for, so I think everyone would need to measure theirs themselves if they're concerned about it.0
