yoga on dvd?

During the summer, there was free yoga in a park near my house, and I went once or twice a week. Now that summer is over, I dearly miss it! I can't afford classes, and the few yoga tapes I've seen, I didn't like--it was either too cheesy (a guy on a mountain top) or too quick or slow paced.

Does anyone do yoga at home? If so, do you have recommendations of tapes/cds/dvds you love to use?

Thanks :-)

Biggest Loser Weightloss Yoga DVD is great. It is a real workout and you can choose how much/long you want to work out off a menu at the beginning of the DVD (warm-up, level 1, level 2, level 3, cool down). I recommend that one and i got mine at Walmart for only $10, so pocket friendly!

Power Yoga with Rodney Yee. There is a DVD on flexibility, one on strength and one on stamina, depending what you want to work on. For me it's flexibility :blushing:

I have a Yoga Burn DVD with Denise Austin that I really like - it's broken into segments, The burn portion is 20 minutes, and then they have target spots (I think it's abs, lower body, and upper body) for 10 min each, and a 10 min relaxation portion that I LOVE! I really enjoy doing the relaxation part over lunch sometimes.

I also have a Yoga for Beginner's DVD by Element that I enjoy too, but I find the moves are harder than my Yoga Burn DVD. I know Element came out with a Yoga for Weight-loss DVD that I am curious about.

Rodney Yee's "Yoga Burn" is another good and challenging practice. I have found that anything from a company called "Gaiam" is pretty good.

Incidentally, "guy on a mountaintop" is pretty much industry standard in yoga dvds.

I like most the Rodney Yee ones. One word of warning though. The Intermediate and Advanced DVDs really are challenging.

I suggest that you go to your library and rent some to see what you like. There are some podcasts out there as well. Yoga journal has some videos on their site that are free (if short).

Yoga for Beginners with Patricia Walden by Gaiam.

It has a nice beginner's practice. The practice is around and hour and half - the length of most classes. It is done in a studio and she really guides you through the poses and shows you how to use props. It has a pose guide section on the DVD and a book that comes with.

I just bought Rodney Yee's AM yoga - my friend swears by his DVDs, haven't given it a try yet, but it has 5 25 min sessions. Thought it would be good way to start the day.
  • that's a great idea! I will check the library, thanks :-)

I've done Rodney Yee and Mariel Hemingway's core workout. It's great for flexibility, and the aerobic portion is fun and effective. There's a 30 minute and a 45 minute program. Before I joined this site, I lost 20 pounds by using that program, as well as cycling, elliptical, and weight training. 19 pounds to go!
