net calories have been to low, now increasing-->SCARED

So after much reading today, i've come to the realization that by not consuming my net i've been starving my body. Sure I've lost some weight over the past 3.5 months (16lbs) which is great and I feel stronger and can finally see the changes, but its stalling a bit. I was eating 1200-1400 calories/day but my net would sometimes only be 300. I burn between 600-1000 calories in exercise a day, yes some days I work out twice (triathlon training). So I've decided to follow this simple math (yes I'm an accountant) and increase my calories, however i was warned to do a little at a time, because my body might not like this at first!!! Has anyone else experienced this or been successful. I'm so nervous to experience a weight gain! Thoughts?!?
