Compare taste and texture of shiritaki noodles

I tried the shiritaki noodles with tofu. They were wonderful without a fishy smell. With all the comments about them being slimy and smelly I'm wondering if that is just for the 0 calorie ones without tofu. I've seen posts about the noodles but nothing comparing the two in flavor. Thanks!

I bought the regular ones and they smelled like fish food. Most of the smell disappeared after washing for a LONG time, but it still lingered. I pan fried for a few minutes, took a bite, then tossed in the trash. Disgusting.

I like both the zero calorie ones and the tofu ones. The key is to dry them off as much as possible after rinsing. I also mix the noodles with meat, egg, and veggies. So yummy!!

Plain ones are kind of gelatinous and a little chewy/crunchy, without any flavour. They don't absorb flavour very well unless you cook them and I don't really get a smell from them, other than the smell of the calcium in the water they're packaged in. In Asia they tend to cook them in broth, so they actually have some flavour and soften up a little.

I love konnyaku/shirataki, but then I'm Eurasian and was brought up around a lot of food Westerners hate. I actually prefer slimy yam noodles and that kind of thing over wheat or rice, and I can go for anything fermented and weird-looking. If you have trouble stomaching them, I'd suggest putting them into a soup like laksa (curry) and heating them through a little. Dry, they're not so good - you're basically just trying to fry fibre, and that's not going to be tasty without strong seasoning like soy and sesame oil. Try to get some liquid seasoning into them.

I bought the fishy zero calorie one, rinsed it off good and never noticed any smell after that. Could have just been the brand but that was my experience with them.

Thanks for the info everyone! Someone just told me that people who love seafood aren't bothered by the smell. I just had some tonight and was pleasantly surprised. If you've never tried them be adventurous. I've always told my kids that once you've tried something then you are qualified to have an opinion as to whether or not it tastes good. I'm glad I didn't let the bad reviews sway my opinion. There are many other foods that the rest of the world seems to love and I can't stand. Regardless of your fooud of choice - Happy eating!
