Eating at someone's house?

I go to my MIL every Thursday for supper and my grandparents every Sunday for lunch and supper. How do I calculate my food for those days? do I guesstimate? Do I just not log? Idk what all they're cooking with. Anyone?

When I go round my boyfriends house I always ask first what we will be eating and I plan my day around that. Sometimes I'm difficult and say I can't eat what everyone else is eating and then I either bring my own food or cook something else for myself or eat before I go. It may seem rude but I think if it was me I'd rather feed a guest something they were happy with than not know at all.

When we eat at my MIL's, I guesstimate. I have a pretty good idea what she uses and I usually am helping in the kitchen. Also I try to make the best choices I can- go light on the mac n cheese, eat smaller portions if going to have a special dessert, skip the rolls, things like that. Don't overly sweat the issue, just enjoy the family time and get in the kitchen with your grandma!
  • MFP has plenty of variations of different foods in the database. if she is making meatloaf, for example, just type that food in and look at the nutritional data shown. I always go with whichever has the higher calories to be on the safe side. Also I agree with the above poster, just make wise eating decisions. Have a salad before the meal if they serve it, avoid bread baskets, eat half your portion of dessert, load up on any vegetables, drink a lot of water, etc. Most important thing is to enjoy the time spent with your family. This site is meant to help you stay on track, not worry about eating with family or make you obsess about calories constantly.

I guesstimate - I work on the basis that in life food is to be enjoyed, in moderation, and there will always be meals at relatives and friends or at restaurants that I cannot control. Do I shut myself off from that or do I say to relatives and friends, cook one meal for me and another for everyone else. Nope, think not.

When I know this sort of thing is happening I work my exercise and intake for the rest of the day around it. I will also watch my portions, minimising or avoiding high fat or sugar foods like desserts and fried foods.

With family though I had told them I was changing the way I was living, particularly in my diet and whilst they generally eat fairly healthily they did change some of the way they cooked some foods and also made sure there was fresh fruit for dessert as well as the uber-icky stuff they indulge in.

Family are the guys that should love you the most and be more than willing to help you.
