Carbs on South Beach Phase 1?

Hey all,
I have the South Beach diet books on hold at my local library but they won't be available for a couple of weeks. After doing some looking around online at the food lists and such for Phase 1 I am really keen to get started. I want to start the Phase 1 now and read the books when I get them. But I am wondering about how many carbs are allowed in Phase 1. I know it's not an exact amount, but is there a general number I should keep under? Because even some of the veggies that are listed as ok foods contain quite a few carbs. If someone can answer I would appreciate it.
