hiking route - how do I retrace?

I live basically beside a forest with hills and valleys all around. They're are loads of pathways through the forest but because of the trees some of them don't show up on Google Earth. So I'm a bit unsure sometimes what my exact route was on some of my longer walks.

So just wondering since I've never actually used a GPS - is there a GPS that you can use to pinpoint your exact location. Is there any alternative to Google Earth which can sort of block out the forest - as in show up some dirt tracks and streams more clearly or a way of using Google Earth to do so?
