First I am going to say I will not give it up cold turkey. Most of my sugar comes from fresh fruits. I think that is healthy.....now lets say I have a bowl of steel cut oats in the morning with a cut up small peach and half of a banana, then I have 5 sugars left for the day....yeah righ, I would go over every day.
Need some suggestions on low cal sugar snacks. I like sweets.
I have thought of already.....
protein shakes and that is about it.
Any suggestions????

Cheese, raw nuts (not peanuts), beef jerky, pork coo (might just be an Aussie thing), leftover sausages/steak, tinned tuna (and salad usually), hard-boiled eggs ... that's about my "go to" list.
Not all at once though0 -
I'm sensitive to sugar, so I stay away from all sweets, fruit juices, pastas, white rice, cereals and breads, etc. I've also discovered my body doesn't handle the natural sugars in oatmeal very well. I'm so much happier when empty carbs aren't in my system. When they are, I get strong cravings and its very hard to distract myself. I also get false hunger cues. My stomach rumbles and aches for food even when I've had plenty to eat.
I do slip up once in a while, and then I have to do a sugar detox. That means going cold turkey on all empty carbs. It takes a lot out of me to get through the first 3 days or so, and then I'm fine again. When I'm sugar free, I don't get nagging cravings, and I can trust my body to give me reliable hunger cues.
Here's what helps me get through it: plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, beans or lentils, small amounts of whole grains and nuts, lots of water, and an adequate amount of protein. Many protein shakes have sugar in them, so I don't use them. I try not to worry too much about staying at my calorie goal until the symptoms go away.
I don't pay attention to MFP's sugar goal, as long as the sugars are from fruit and other whole foods. I'm not sure if following MFP's sugar goal helps you lose weight faster - that's not really my goal, personally. I think fruit and veggie sugars are there to encourage us to eat them. All those nutrients, some of which are probably not even identified yet, are good for us and support metabolism.
If you've never done a sugar detox, it might be worth a try. You might discover, as I have, that living without sweets isn't the end of the world, but the beginning of a better life free of compulsive/impulsive eating. Good luck!0 -
Why not try to start switching to artificial sweeteners like Stevia?0

sugar free jello, carb master yogurt, celery and peanut butter, no sugar added ice cream... those are our go to snacks.0

Hahahaha, we're gastro-twins...this describes me exactly! I gave up oatmeal and rice in April (they were my last go-to grains), and I feel like a new person. Lately, with all the fresh Summer fruit around I've been maxing-out on natural sugars, and getting cravings again. I'm just trying to be mindful of it, and wait out the season...delicious peaches, plums and blackberries will be gone soon enough! I also use stevia and Xylitol and have no reaction or cravings from them.
edit: ...and I would not call stevia especially an "artificial" sweetener at all, it's naturally derived and has actual health benefits.0 -
Do like I do and buy sugar free snacks...Jell-o brand sugar free pudding, snack pack brand sugar free pudding, sugar free miniture hershey dark chocolate candy & sugar free oreos just to name a few things. Fresh fruit and also Blue Bunny Sweet freedom ice cream bars.(no sugar)0

... initially I tend to go with sugarfree popcicles and jello. They even have sugar free cool whip. Hello brand has a good sugar free chocolate mousse. Usually that helps for the first few days, anyway. Then?!? Easier for me to continue without the added sugars of sweets like cookies, cakes, etc. I also will blend blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries with a little splenda and freeze it. Kinda feels like a treat.0

Nuts and the darkest chocolate you can tolerate. I have to stay away from all real sweets though because I have no self control.

It's all natural. Like cyanide. But seriously, I have to stay away from it because it has blood pressure lowering effects & mine is pretty low already.0 -
Thanks all! I will try a mixture of your ideas, except going cold turkey (maybe going cold turkey one full day on occasions). I will try stevia and sugar free candies and puddings, and stick with fresh fruits and not worry so much about the sugars from those.0

Those 100 calories packaged snacks that have cookies, etc., in them. Enough to curve the sweet tooth.0
