I want to gain weight, the healthy way!

Hi, i've been inspired to join after ready a thread on being skinny fat.
I've done a bit of research on it and im so confused.
I've seen the GOMAD challenge: the thought of drinking 8 pints of milk a day turns my stomach, and it surely cant be healthy.
I'd like to steadily gain weight and be able to maintain it when i reach my goal. Although i have no idea what my goal weight is tbh. Because I know i have to build muscle which will be the main cause of a 'weight' gain, but i'm already pretty skinny so i need to put on fat, right?
(Also i know i shouldnt rely on the scales, but i need to monitor, it somehow?)
I plan on joining a gym when i go back to uni, but for now there isnt too much i can do other than 10 min workouts and 30DS, although it hurts my knees
(lack of money, even for running shoes!)
From what i gather, i need to:
1. Do strength exercises - lift heavy and short reps?
2. Up my calorie intake (again lack of money doesnt help)
3. Keep cardio to a minimum
Feel free to correct me if im wrong
Does anyone have any advice for what i should try and do in the meantime, before joining a gym
ETA: I've just realised i probably shouldnt have posted on the intro board can i move it, or a moderator (if there is one?)
