 I have been working SO hard, I have built up my walking endurance to actually progress to running.............LOVE IT!!!!! It felt SO good to finally run. I started with small goals and slowly progressed (over many weeks) to actually run 8 miles on Monday. And then something happened to my knee! I don't know what but I know that I shouldn't run on it! I am SO disappointed, I tried this morning and realized that I was doing more harm than good so finished only 3 miles of walking! I feel SO defeated and discouraged. Everything that I have read says that I should rest it until I can run on it with NO PAIN. So here I am, trying to loose weight (1200 calories a day) without any exercise! UGH!!! Sorry about the pity party but I just had to VENT!

I'm sorry! That just stinks! Congrats on the 8 miles though. :ohwell:

I hope it gets better soon! Does it hurt while walking too? Because walking is still better than nothing. :flowerforyou:

I'm sorry that happened to you. I know what it feels like when you're doing really well and then your body throws you a double whammy. But you don't have to do without any exercise; swimming or aquafit should be okay for you as they don't put stress on your joints. Maybe you'll discover that you really enjoy that too!

that sucks major. What you can do is walk 6 - 7 miles a day or more & burn a significant amount of calories still. You definitely want it to heal & not suffer something debilitating.
  • Is it hurting on the side? It might be a tight IT band. If it is, you should try one of those foam rollers to rub it out. Also, do you have swimming pool anywhere around you? You could try swimming for your workout until your knee feels better. It is a low impact workout so it shouldn't bother your knee too much, and it burns a ton of calories! Hope this helps, and hope your knee feels better soon.

    Aw, that stinks.

But remember that punches (even punching the air) is a great way to get your heartrate up & burn some calories when you have a leg injury. :flowerforyou:
  • That very same thing happened to me. I trained and trained for my first half marathon this past may and about 8 miles into the half my knee started hurting so badly. I never had problems with my knees so it was really devastating. Just make sure you're resting it and taking it easy...don't run on it for awhile and build up the miles again slowly. It'll get better, just give it time!!!
  • Thank you Everyone! I really appreciate the support! :flowerforyou:
  • Sorry to hear about your knee pain but Great to hear you are out there running....

Tip from a running coach (me)-When you knee is better try taking walking breaks every half mile to mile for about 30 seconds to a minute. This will build up your endurance faster, save your knees, and actually give you the energy you need at the end of your runs.

Happy running to you...don't give up!
  • These things happen. It stinks and I am sure you feel cheated that the injury happened just as you feel you were turning a corner (I know I would). I know the running made you feel good so maybe that can be your motivation to take on a a better diet?

    BE NOT DISCOURAGED!

Anything that appears as a set back can be turned around. If nothing else the setback can become a reason to redouble your efforts (just not on your knee right now)

I agree, it may be your IT band. The first time I had IT band problems I freaked out. Thought it was my knee. I had never had knee problems before so I was so discouraged. Well come to find out it was my IT band. An IT band injury can feel like knee pain b/c of where the IT band attaches.

Try what the earlier poster suggested . Roll out your IT band on a foam roller. If it's almost unbearable then you hit the right spot! IT band injuries can be fixed pretty easy. A little foam roller and a little rest and you'll be back to running in no time.
  • Have you tried just working out with maybe like yoga or something less intense? The same thing happen to my mom, and she is very upset, my hubby's knee to, he got a knee brace and wore it and it help him alot. Maybe you should do knee exercise, to strenghten the knee. Hopeful you just moved wrong and its nothing serious. Im sure you have thought of this but....
