Soreness caused by lactic acid (not all soreness IS caused by acid, but it is one of the possible causes - sometimes it is just muscle damage being repaired) is eased by continuing to use the muscles after heavy exercise. One of the reasons rowing is such a tough sport is that once you have finished the race you are generally out of the boat reasonably quickly and don't get a chance to keep working the muscles and use up the lactic acid, which is actually used by the muscles as an every source. You will see track cyclists in between races on stationary bikes, which prevents the acid building up. I would suggest a proper warm down after exercise, very light repetition of the activity you have been doing. If you are running, do 10 minutes very slowly and ending in a walk at the end of your run.
