What pushes you further during your workout?

I found that watching an action flick on Netflix while walking on my Gazelle increases my speed, length of workout, and my calories burned.

What "little things" help you "push" yourself further in your workouts?

    Watching TV....looking at a wall is boring.

So now I watch some anime during my workouts

Honestly, the mirror. My damn gym has mirrors in front of the cardio equipment too. Seeing that tummy jiggle like jello can certainly get me moving those last few minutes.

Otherwise, the TVs help a lot. Mindless sit-coms really help to pass the time.

    Rock music/heavy metal, especially Godsmack.

Of course, I messed up more form while jogging the other day because I was playing air guitar and air drums. :blushing:

    Fun!
I was bored to death doing a treadmill or elliptical, even with a TV to watch. Now I go to Jazzercise and I'm never bored. I love the music, and it changes all the time. Its a fun and friendly atmosphere. I average 25 classes a month. I'm 62, so I like that they show modifications too.

    MUSIC!!!

not just ANY music, though, not for me anyway, has to have certain beat.

I have a song, same ol song every time, often over and over, that i used to use for running, for eons,
(back when i was a runner)
and the beat was PERFECT for my running. I'd get sooooo into That song, that if my music skipped---i'd trip!
    lol!
To this day, THAT song gives me a Pavlovian rush of energy to even hear it.
I have a few others i used to run to, but def have one that is my very favorite one, has a real 'you can do it' type of lyrics, too, about pressing on.

now i can't run but, i use that song for walking now. HEADPHONES, HEADPHONES, HEADPHONES.

AND DOGS, are good walking/running companions, too. 0O2Dk.gif
Note, for anyone with a couch potato dog
if your dog has not been walking far, nor running far, the dog ALSO needs to build up to working out, too, or else he might limp next day, or worse.

We go to the local high school yard, when no one else is there, and i walk the track, and my dog tags along, often smiling up at me about how great he thinks this whole activity is.

Haha me too, if I don't have my iPod at the ready the dance music at the gym is torture. Headbanging is also a bad idea on a cross trainer

Other people to workout with. You'd be surprised how much having a partner can motivate you.
  • documentaries. i'm a weirdo... i know. but i turn on a nat geo documentary, and it keeps me on the machine longer. between miles i hop of the elliptical to grab some water and a stretch... and gee, there is my mirror, "still fat" so i get back on for another mile.

For me, it's music and taking classes. My workout music really makes me go faster and harder. The fitness classes keep it different and interesting and I want to keep up with everyone else.

The fact that I'll be finished sooner and since I'm already working out I might as well push myself to work as hard as I can.

    Two things!

One, how awesome I'm going to look at LFCC when I've slimmed down and toned up ;D FemGrimmjow to be!

Two, when my old so called friends see what I've become, success is the greatest form of revenge!!

I think I subconsciously ask myself the question, "are you doing your best right now?" and if the answer is "no" then it better be because I'm at the beginning of a difficult workout or race and I'm pacing myself. Otherwise, I will push harder.

Lately, it's been listening to the Pitbull station on Pandora. And all the cussing. Very motivating to this badass in training!
  • I'm not someone who can just go to the gym and exercise. I'm too self-conscious. So I bought a boot camp DVD and the instructor, Suzanne Hitzman, is a really good motivator. If I was to become confident enough to go to the gym, I'd just bring my MP3 player and some headphones. That's plenty of push for me.

Doing workouts that don't require pushing.

If I'm not enjoying it, nothing on this planet is going to push me to finish it.

I'm the exact opposite. I HATE working out with other people. My gym time is my zone out time. I don't even like going for walks at the park with people (when the purpose of the walk is to get some cardio done in the fresh air). I've had several friends say "oh, you're walking? Call me, I'll come along" Yeah, ok, I'll get right on that. NOT!

I know it sounds antisocial, but that's just what works best for me.

So, for what makes me go further, longer, harder? My ipod. Without it, I'm lost.
  • Watching the olimpics these last couple of weeks has given me some motivation to push harder. 37 years old and got 4th place in the mens marathon! Thats crazy. I gotta push harder lol

Usually just getting back to where I started from- meaning I usually hike, bike, or kayak until I'm ready to quit- and then I still have to turn around and get all the way home.
