Fitbit and MFP-exercise?

I am a little confused on the activity portion of the fitbit.

Normally, I dont record my walking, steps, etc. to MFP...I only record an actualy "workout." Like a good sweaty, elevated heart rate for 30 minutes type of workout...

I noticed MFP gave me 225 calories just because fitbit said I walked like 8,000 steps (around the house and park).

Doesnt MFP already calculate my TDEE or whatever?

I walk a lot during the day and never include those calories burned.

Make any sense?

  • MFP just uses basic (and I mean VERY basic!) BMR calculations and your stated weight loss goals to figure your calorie allotment for the day. In my humble opinion, it calculates WAY too low for most people. It doesn't take into account any movement/activity that you don't add yourself. When you link your Fitbit to MFP, you get a more accurate idea of your activity level. Fitbit adds calories back for you based on how much you actually move around during the day. If you do any kind of workout that involves weight training, cycling, or elliptical (basically anything where you're not moving your body forward through space), you can manually add that into MFP to "get credit" for those calories too.
I hope I didn't confuse you further! LOL! It does take a little bit of mental gymnastics to figure out what counts what! : ) (Wonder how many calories THAT burns!! Heehee!)
