I like to cross train by biking. For me it is biking to work because its only a few miles. But I find the bit of regular biking seems to help muscles in the legs for running. And somehow they are different areas so I can bike and run most days without burning out either.
But for running. Start off with running / walking intervals. I'm sure that couch to 5k has the idea pretty well. But for cross training and toning, try to do the same kinds of effort in intervals. Not going hard enough that you get sore. Keep it at your level so you can do it frequently without getting hurt. Within a bit you will notice an improvement.0 -
If you have access to a pool (YMCA memberships can be very cheap), try swimming! It's great for your joints as well as arm and back toning.0

Biking and swimming are the two most popular activities to cross train with running. But some strength training won't hurt either. I forget exactly which exercises were recommended. I think squats and lunges, but also upper body and core muscle strength are important. Look it up0
