Should obese people do sit ups or should they wait until they have lost some weight ?

I think they should..like any other strength exercise..ab work is used to strength muscle..i would advise the individual NOT to expect six pack abs on top of fat..you need cardio and fat burning exercises to actually see the results of the ab work!0

Lol- in my opinion nobody should do situps!
I would focus on an overall strength and cardio program to drop fat. Ab muscles are relatively small- and your time is better spent doing other things, since the abs will be hidden behind body fat- work on getting rid of the body fat. I mean, if you like them, do them, but you're unlikely to see much results from them for a while.0
