I copied several mp3 files to an external drive and plugged it into my netbook. The netbook will not play them, it says that I dont "have permission" to play them. Neither VLC nor Media Player will play them. The big but <<< of this is that if I copy them from the external that wont play them to the desktop of the netbook that wont play them from the external, they play! I have used my old friend google to try to correct this but had to restore my computer after taking some posted advice..... any ideas anyone?

If you ripped them with WMP they are probably in .wmp format and not mp3. If the netbook you are trying to play them on does not have the EXACT SAME version of WMP they may not play off the external drive. You may need to convert them to mp3 before they play directly off the external drive. Windows products are proprietary like that....go figure. Do yourself a favor and get another program to rip with. Good Luck!

They are most definitely mp3 files, it has something to do with the "owner" settings of the files and folders. There is a way to set the files so that the operator of the computer has rights but I havent been able to get it set yet....

Try this....right click on the file or folder..... properties....change the stuff under the security tab to 'system' and allow all the check marks. That should take care of the user rights issue and allow anyone on the computer/drive to use the files. You would need to have the external drive connected to the original computer that you used to rip the files. If that doesn't work you may need to allow sharing between the external drive and the netbook. That is the extent of my guesses....good luck!
