i alter anything i can - bra backs - i cut off the catch and and carefully re sew int onto the band - the metal catches will shatter a sewing machine needle - learn from my mistake. tou can also shorten the straps

pants i alter a little at he side seam or a lot at the back crotch seam

(careful here of side and back pockets) and take the waistband of first then alter it to fit the new size pants

skirts: i normally just take of the waist band - sew in a dart and then replace waist band ( slightly shorter) or if it is a pencil skirt i follow the original shape and just reduce a bit on both sides. ( taking off zippers is a pain so sometimes i dart and then adjust the seem lower down)

Edit - i even turned and old massive t-shirt into a pair of hot pants for pole dancing in!

it would be awesome if you could do a photo-tutorial of how you alter your bras!!!!!!

I have no time or patience (or admittedly the skills) for altering clothes myself nor the interest in holding on to an old look, so I donate old clothes to a charity. While I'm there, I pick up more clothes in my new size and will continue to do so until I reach my goal weight. At *that* time, I'll get a new wardrobe :-)

I don't have any bra's to alter at the moment (after a quick rummage through my unmentionables draw  )
    but these sites are good

    altering the band:

    altering the cup

    and slight ly different

and possibly best of all sewing your own - this may be too advanced but if you understand how to make one you can alter anything you like for the perfect fit:

hope these help. they are where i looked before i started snipping and sewing!

I donate everything. I'm really petite so things either fit me well or fit me horribly, there's no middle ground. I've been doing a lot of goodwill/consignment shopping while loosing and it's worked out fine.. I donate things back when I'm done with them. Now that I'm only 5lbs away from goal I will say that it feels nice to buy things new, haha. :)

I refuuuuuuuse to hold onto my big clothes. Refuse. I feel like having them in my house gives me permission to wear them and just no. I'm done having children, I won't need them.
  • I donated most of my clothes as well. I did keep some jeans that are more forgiving for when I'm bloated. I call them my 'fat-day jeans' haha. I also kept a pair of jeans that I wore when I was 50lbs heavier. I use that for motivation...they remind me to congratulate myself on what I've accomplished.

Since I can't afford to keep buying new clothes, I usually go to a Chinese/Indian tailor who alters clothes for a very small price and wear them till they fade/tear/look old. Underclothes you cannot help. Gotta throw them out after they get too big.

it would be awesome if you could do a photo-tutorial of how you alter your bras!!!!!!

Here's a website that has tons of pictures on how to alter clothing. I'm just going to put the link for altering the straps on a bra. I may have to try this in the future. By the way, if you hit home you'll find a great list of alterations for just about everything. I love looking for stuff like this.

    http://www.learning-alterations.com/Bra-Straps.html

I don't know if this would help but it shows how to alter the band that goes underneath and has some pictures that go along with it. I've never tried it but she seems to know what she's doing. This will help as we all lose weight.

This is an alteration if your ladies are too close together and the center piece is too wide. I never thought about doing this one. It looks easy. Oops. I just noticed that someone had already posted this one. :noway: Oops.

    Anyway, hope this helps. :drinker:

Donate. But I do have a pair of jeans I'm in love with that will be too big soon (they are borderline now) and I don't really want to let those go. Since they are designer jeans, I may sell them on eBay or craigslist.

I donated mine, some jeans went to a friend but the majority of it went to charity.
  • I usually pack them up and take and donate them to my momma! :) What she does not want I give to her garage sale...from there what doesnt sell will be donated to a local charity.

It was pretty funny. I finished typing it up and it looks like you'd already submitted yours (grin). You win. You beat me. LOL. I had one site that was different which you might want to look at. It looked like it had some neat tips. I'll definitely check out the ones you posted that I didn't find.
  • Some i get it althered and some donate it

I have donated some and had a yard sale too. The money I made from selling them and other stuff I didn't need I used to buy smaller clothes.

Any clothes that are still worth wearing are donated to my local women's shelter. It has a resale shop where the women are taken for a couple of interview outfits. Then when they are ready to set up household they are given an allowance to go in and buy dishes, pots pans, etc. So if it's nice and I can't use it, it's off to the shelter.
  • I do a lot of re-purposing. There are a lot of things you can do with those old clothes that don't fit. If you have access to a sewing machine, you can resize all those old shirts that are too big so they fit you properly. If you don't have a sewing machine, there are a ton of fun things you can do with scissors and some fabric glue. Feel free to message me if you want a few tips!

    Donate, donate, donate!!

I've often joked to my mother that there should be some VERY well-dressed poor people in our town.

Anything dressy that still looks good - keep and get alterations. (I have ONE red jacket with satin lapels that needs to be shortened, from about 10 years ago, haven't done it yet because I've GAINED since then..)
