First off let me say I am in no way complaining. I posted prior about my issues with my doc calling me obese.. Here is my story.. I am 5'3 and weigh (as of this morning) 170.1. Why then am I in a size 8. I read others posts and I see that women my height and weight are big. I do work out and stick to calorie counting. Do I really have that much muscle mass that 170.1 pounds on a 5'3 frame has me in a size 8. My coworker thinks im a freak of nature. she even made me go to the gym on our job and get on the scale because she did not believe i weigh what I do. She is 5'3 at 150 and looks 20 pounds heavier than i do.
I have never really looked my weight but this is nuts. At my highest I was 184. At this point I am thinking that 170 is my ideal weight since the scale won't budge. When I tell people that they tell me my ideal is in the 140's.I put on a shirt this morning that I hadn't worn since June and its falling off my shoulders. I know I'm building muscle but I shouldn't look like this at my weight.
Am i nuts for posting this thread. All I keep hearing is muscle does not weigh more than fat. If thats the case why am in a size 8? Muscle has to weigh more than fat... On the last thread I posted I even had a guy tell me that I must be in denial because at my height 170 is obese...
Eveyone kept saying I needed to check my body fat %. So I took my measurements this morning and it came out to 26.73%BF Also my muscle mass is 124.81.... I know the BF% is in the acceptatable range, not sure about the muscle mass... And I know the internet can be fickle so I used a few sites and they were all around the same numbers.... Comments????
Thanx everyone.

bmi is crap i get anywhere close to even the large range for my height my doc is checking for signs of an eating disorder if your a size 8 id say your doing good so if you feel good and look good in the mirror ask your doctor to check your ratios... muscle weighs more for the same amount of space than fat its kinda like a lb of bricks and a lb of feathers weigh the same but the lb of feathers is gonna take up more space0
-
and look at how your built my muscle structure is actually for someone taller than me so im never gonna get near my bmi it doesnt help that im barrel chested (thank you dad *grumbles* and a G cup so yeah0
-
Yea Im pretty big chested as well. I love it. With all the exercise I look like I got a boob job. They are so perky. At 47 that is exactly what I need. LOL0

Oh, the fat and muscle weigh the same argument. 1lb of feathers weighs the same as 1 lb of lead. Which one takes up more space? Same thing with fat and muscle...0 -
I'm similar. I'm 5'5", weight 161 currently, and I'm in a size 6.0

I agree, BMI isn't that great of a scale, it tells me my ideal weight is around 155, I'm 211 right now and when I was more in shape, my weight was usually between 170-190. which is my goal again. BMI is a decent measurement, but it's by no means perfect.0

While it is true, a pound of muscle is the same weight as a pound of fat, the muscle is more dense and takes up less space. That is why someone that weighs less than you can look fatter than you, because your lean muscle isn't occupying the same amount of space as her fat.0 -
I'm 5'3, 135lbs and a Size 2, I know girls who are 5'6-5'8 and 110lbs who are a bigger size than me. My BMI is the HIGH range of healthy (If I got over 140 I would be considered overweight). I don't think a size 8 is obese, at all. I would go have your BF% and all that done professionally and I would say as long as your blood tests and such are coming back normal then you're not obese.
Muscle doesn't technically weigh more than fat, a pound is a pound, a pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of lead, and a pound of fat, and a pound of muscle. Muscle is denser than fat, therefore, a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat, so therefore you can have more muscle in less space than the equivalent weight of fat.
I'm currently at 24% BF and aiming to get mine down to 18% as my first goal, and then maybe 14-16% after I evaluate how much I want to push myself. I honestly say though, as long as you're healthy and feel like you can do whatever you want to be doing without your weight limiting you and you're happy with your size/weight then don't pay much attention to it. I constantly get told I already have a great shape and asked why I watch what I eat, but I'm doing all fo this for myself, which really confuses people.0 -
125 lbs of lbm is awesome for a 5'3" woman, so if being muscular is your goal, then conrats. 27% BF is slightly high for a female, but not terrible at all. I imagine if you lose a few lbs you will look awesome. Tell anyone who has a problem with your body\stats to phugoff.0
-
Wow! Do you do a lot of weight lifting that you'd have that much muscle, or are you just lucky?
What were your measurements?0 -

Thanx Boo. Yea I've only restarted this fitness journey 11 weeks ago so I'm hoping to continue to get the BF under control. Shooting for under 20%....0 -

Its funny. I was doing all cardo with the turbo fire routine. Saw on the message boards that I also need to lift. So i got a dvd off netflix that incorporates cardio and strength training. (10 days to a better body) I like to say ive started lifting like a man. Not really. LOL Just more weight than I thought I could handle. And it has really amped up my muscles. I am finally seeing definition in places I never did before.
I still have a long way to go as I'd still like to decrease the belly fat I have. My waist is still at 34 inches. Not proud of it. But it has come down considerabley and my belly is my weakest point...0 -
Lol, yeah, I hear you! I am 5"3, 167.6 as of this morning and wear an 8 or loose 10. My chest accounts for some of that...lol. According to an online calculator that factored in my measurements, weight, and height, my body fat percentage is 33.9% (and 33% is the high end of normal apparently).
I am doing Turbo Fire currently but from reading things on here I've learned that I need to start lifting more. I love how TurboFire makes me feel so I'm going to keep it up and just add to it.
I discovered helloitsdan on here so I upped my calories, changed my percentages, and will be trying that to see if it helps.
I have to learn to stop letting the scale rule me!0 -

Heavy lifting, proper eating, and some basic treadmil (optional really) did this for me http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/699445-zomg-my-first-big-cut-is-over0 -

Wow you look amazing. I hate when women think they have to lift light weights. I lift to the point of muscle failure. Till I can't do another rep. OMG it has made such a difference. I don't have a treadmill, but we do have an eliptical. I may start on that about 15 minutes.. Oh and did I mention Im almost 50??? Go me!!0
