Going to start taking some vitamins (*because let's face it- I probably should*) but what are some vitamins that I can take together to help with weight loss / boosting my metabolism. So far I have b12 niacin and cranberry.

Also- what are some good vitamins for skin and hair?! (I have biotin)

A multivitamin to start with, when doing weight loss. To get complete nutrition, you often lack something in this area, so a this is a good start.

I have other issues going on beyond wanting to lose weight, but this is what I take:

    Multivitamin
    Vitamin D3
    Fish oil
    Extra calcium
    B-complex

Make sure you are taking a good multivitamin that contains all the majors, along with calcium and folic acid. Also Fish or Flax oil for omega 3s, and vitamin D3.

I take Shaklee multi's, vit B and fish oil. They are great! I don't know about for weight loss though. I didn't think there were vitamins just for weight loss. I know there are some essential oils that help with weight loss.
  • Take a high mg of vitamin D3.. my Dr put me on a supplement and it has definately boosted my metabolism like she said it would... and try Spring Valley Hair, Skin & Nail vitamins from Wal-Mart. I've been taking them for 5 years and they are great! My hair has never been so long in my life (it's to my waist), and my nails used to be so thin they peeled but not anymore. You have to take them 3x a day, but I just take mine all at once in the evenings :)

I'm not sure they're for 'weight loss' specifically. One of my friends said he has been taking niacin, cranberry, b12 and extra virgin coconut oil and he's lost like 50 lbs since Jan- just taking those. Not changing his diet or excercise. I of course don't want to lose anything extreme that fast, but I would like a little boost b/c i've been at a plateau for over a month now and i'm getting frustrated b/c i'm doing everything right.

Vitamin's don't aid weight loss so much as provide your body proper nutrition. Calories in and out provides the weight loss. I take a one a day and fish oil (1200mg).

A multi-vitamin would be good as an over all wellness. Vitamin B complex and Zinc are good for strength and regrowth of your hair. Just make sure that what you ARE taking is not being doubled up from another vitamin...too much of certain things can cause problems! That is why a multi-vitamin is a good choice...gives you a little of everything, but not too much of one thing!

    Great posts!

For fish oil, does anyone have a certain dose? My pills are the size of a shoe and they are 1200 mg. The bottle says to take 3 a day? Could that possibly be true? Three!?

I've heard that multivitamins really don't do much for you (they had a thing about it online Nightline), but that's neither here nor there. You'd probably get better of getting vitamins and nutrients through eating healthy foods.

I take a multivitamin because vitamin deficiencies cause me to have a condition called Burning Mouth Syndrome, where it feels like you always just scalded your tongue on hot chocolate. I haven't pinned down which lack of a vitamin causes it, though.

Fish oil and vitamin E are great for skin and hair, almost all women are deficient in vitamin D so I take that daily as well as folic acid, B12 and a multivitamin. Keeping up with all of your vitamins in general will help with weight loss and metabolism because they support the immune system and well pretty much every system in the body. Taking vitamins (and eating nutritiously of course) will help your body act as a well oiled machine.

I read a lot about fish oil/omega 3 in the strength building articles, but don't remember the specifics of why. Don't take too much, there is a lot of controversial studies on people over-doing vitamins/minerals (i.e. taking vitamin X helps w/ ___ cancer, but if taken too much actually increases your risk for that cancer)

I take One-a-day womens active, D3 (because of being highly D deficient on lab work), B12 (same), and pro-biotic. Need to add in fish oil/omega 3, but don't want 'fish stick burps' that happened with the cheap version of it.

Just make sure you don't end up making expensive urine...you can tell a little by how your urine smells if you are passing a lot (at least, for some of the vit/min)

Keep an eye on solubility of the pills. D3 and B12 are fat soluable, so you need to take those with a meal that contains fat. If you take w/ your fat free cereal and fat free milk, it won't do you much good. Also, if your multivit has Iron, may need to eat on full stomach due to iron induced nausea

I take a prenatal vitamin every day even though I'm not preggers. Lots of good vitamins in there, often more than a regular multivitamin. I eat relatively clean and I love veggies, but the prenatal has additional elements like biotin (skin & hair), etc.

    Just my opinion:

    Multi-vitamin
Fish oil ( I take one with fish oil and D3)
    Vitamin D (everyone lacks this)
    Vitamin C

Everything else is a waste of money. Once again, MY OPINION.

B12 is not a fat soluble vitamin, all the B's are water soluble. Fat solubles are A, D, E and K. It's my personal recommendation that you don't supplement with any of these unless you have had your blood tested and have a known deficiency. You don't have to take fat soluble vitamins with fat.... solubility has nothing to do with that... all it means is whether it will be stored (in fat cells) or excreted in the urine if the body doesn't need it. It works the same if you take it with fat or not. Back to not supplementing the fat soluble vitamins.... they are stored and you can actually "overdose" on them. It's usually not an issue when getting them from food, only when you take supplements, so just be careful. I don't recommend that anybody takes ANYTHING (even vitamins) without the direction of a licensed professional). Even vitamins can interact with other medications if you are on them, and you should be aware of the side effects to look for when taking even basic things (like iron).

Personally I take fish oil (yes, 3000 mg/day is the recommended intake for benefits), vitamin D (diagnosed with severe deficiency in 2011) and magnesium (at the direction of my doctor to help with PMDD symptoms, and I only do this the 2nd 2 weeks of my cycle).

First of all, stay away from pill vitamins. Go with liquids as much as possible when taking supplements. Why? Vitamins in pill form are a waste because the body will only absorb about 2% and the rest goes in the toilet. With liquid vitamins, the body absorbs 98%. You're wasting your money on pill vitamins.

Try Max Effect (The Vitamin Shoppe) or Alive (bought cheap from Amazon).

This is fact...not fiction or an opinion.

My mistake on the B12, but as for needing to take fat soluable vitamins with meals is a controversial topic with different findings. Some have been shown to have better absorption w/ meals containing fat, while others have shown the same absorption on an empty stomach. I prefer to just take mine with dinner to cover both scenarios.

    This is from livestrong.com
Fat-soluble vitamins are those that require the presence of dietary fat in order to be absorbed properly. The fat-soluble vitamins, which include vitamins A, D, E and K, travel through your lymphatic system before becoming absorbed into your bloodstream.

    From NHS.UK
Fat-soluble vitamins are found mainly in fatty foods such as animal fats including butter and lard, vegetable oils, dairy foods, liver and oily fish.

While your body needs these vitamins every day to work properly, you do not need to eat foods containing them every day.

This is because, if your body does not need these vitamins immediately, it stores them in your liver and fatty tissues for future use. These stores can build up so they are there when you need them. However, if you have much more than you need, fat-soluble vitamins can be harmful.

    Fat-soluble vitamins are:

    vitamin A
    vitamin D
    vitamin E
    vitamin K
    Water-soluble vitamins
Water-soluble vitamins are not stored in the body, so you need to have them more frequently.

If you have more than you need, your body gets rid of the extra vitamins when you urinate. Because the body does not store water-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are generally not harmful.

Water-soluble vitamins are found in fruit, vegetables and grains. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, they can be destroyed by heat or by being exposed to the air. They can also be lost in water used for cooking.

This means that by cooking foods, especially boiling them, we lose many of these vitamins. The best way to keep as much of the water-soluble vitamins as possible is to steam or grill these foods, rather than boil them.

Water-soluble vitamins are vitamin C, the B vitamins and folic acid.

    And...this is vitamincouncil.org
How should I take my vitamin D?
Both forms of vitamin D may be taken any time of day with, or without, any other food or supplement and still remain effective. If one is concerned about absorption, they may take their vitamin D at mealtime, though there is no evidence to indicate this is more effective.

Most people take their vitamin D daily, yet there are some who opt to take it weekly at a higher dose. Since the body is designed to store vitamin D for future use, a weekly interval should produce the same results as daily use. 12

WebMD Article (of course, study is only 17 people..woo-hoo, that isn't a real study...)
May 7, 2010 -- Taking your vitamin D supplement with the largest meal of the day may boost its absorption substantially, according to a new study.

Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic instructed 17 men and women, average age 64, whose blood levels of vitamin D were borderline insufficient despite taking supplements, to take their supplements with the largest meal of the day.

After two or three months, the study participants had about a 50% increase in blood levels of the vitamin, regardless of the dose they took.

So...take the review of whichever :) There is conflicting studies for everything! lol
