Supplements to help muscle cramping?

I have muscle pain on the top of each of my feet...not really during exercise & everyday activities, but once I sit down to relax and in the morning when I get up. I eat a banana a day to get my potassium, but I think I need something more (my charts say that I'm no where close to reaching my daily maximum for potassium). I'm thinking of adding a potassium supplement to my diet (I already take B12, Krill Oil & a multi-vitamin). Can you suggest either taking something else or something in addition to the potassium?

Thank you!

L-taurine. 3-5 grams a day. Very inexpensive too

Do not take potassium supplements without checking it with your physician. As a healthy person can get enough potassium through diet. I'm not sure about US market and FDA but under normal circumstances. 80-100mg of potassium per tablet ( a banana has what, 500mg? Supplements are pointless) is the norm for potassium supplements. That's like 2% of RDI and all those supplements recommend one tablet a day. That should hint how fragile potassium metabolism of human body is. Acute extreme changes to potassium levels is fatal. It can go as far as cardiac arrest or respitory failure.

i saw my physio today, and she mentioned that often if you are anemic that can cause musle pain.
but you should be getting enough iron from your diet, especially if your already taking a multivitamin.

have you tried doing some stretched/ massage at the end of your work out to see if ot prevents it??

I've found that iron can be tricky to get and you really need to focus on it. My wife and daughter are both anemic. We have been tossing lots of spinach into our diets and it seems to help

Iron is one micro that i haven't had any trouble with. I eat spinach regularly and also potatoes are a great source of iron.

For reasons stated above, do not try to reach your potassium goals with supplements. I have a similar problem with cramping and also try to hit my potassium macros. Veggies (potatoes, mushrooms, broccoli) and milk contain potassium as do apples, bananas, and other fruits. One of the best sources I found was the low sodium V8 juice. 12 oz contain over 1500 untis. Of course you have to like V8 juice, which fortunately for me, I do.

Magnesium. Worked for me when potassium didn't. I have a magnesium / oil spray which works transdermally and gets the magnesium into the affected parts quickly.

  • thanks everyone! i had read the about the potassium thing right after i posted this (maybe i should've done it the opposite way...LOL). i have plenty of iron in my diet...i have a spinach smoothie everyday...i'll try adding more potassium-rich fruits and veggies and see if that works.
