It has been proven that hot sauce can increase your metabolism and close your stomach lining, but how often should I have it before it becomes dangerous? Once a meal or twice a week, etc? Please help?

Like anything you should probably have it in moderation
I know people who put hot sauce on everything just about all the time
I couldnt handle that because its too much salt and hard on my stomach
Yeah hot sauce is low calorie ,low fat, low carb but its also very very high in Sodium
The AVERAGE person should have approx 2000-2500mg of sodium a day (In my opinion)
most americans have about 3000mg on average a day if not more... mostly because they are unaware just how much salt is in foods & sauces. Everything you buy just about comes with salt already in it because its what used to keep foods longer.
I suggest sticking to how much sodium you should be getting.
I use hot sauce on my eggs/egg whites and i use one - two cap fulls of Franks
Just check the back of the bottle.. Whats the serving size and how many mg of sodium are in one serving??
Take 2000 and divide it by how many miligrams of sodium are in it and that will show you MAX how many servings of that you can have... but thats not going to include all the salt in your food already and other condiments/sauces you may have used
Some people may argue that salt is fine and won't hurt you
But it leads to heart disease and other issues as well as holds in water weight
Also salty foods are usually addicting.
Thats my take on it..
Ps. Just for the future I wouldnt go to Fox for any diet tips or any information at all regarding pretty much everything lol
Look for a good food and nutrition website or youtube has lots of great stuff dude.
Hope this helps0 -

You can have hot sauce everyday. Many Asians eat hot spicy food daily. If you have high blood pressure you may just want to monitor your sodium intake.

as often as you want?0

The article basically states that by making something painful to eat, you will eat less of it . Duh. If you want to torture yourself, go for it.
"While it has no real science behind it, some think it works by tricking the mind. If you have a dose of hot sauce every time you eat junk food, you'll avoid the junk food to avoid the pain.
"One of the major features of pain, is to learn to avoid danger, and by taking a swig of Tabasco you are switching on the avoidance mechanism," says Dr. Antoniades.0 -
I use that Sriracha (affectionately known as kok sauce:) pretty often, but I do keep an eye on the sodium content, since I have high blood pressure.0

My consumption of tabasco sauce and cayenne pepper is biblical.
Take spice away from me and I will not be responsible for my actions.0 -
I use fresh chili peppers in all my meals but not because of weight loss or anything but simply because I love spicy foods. Without the spiciness, the food tastes bland to me.0
-
In short Reggie
Just watch your Sodium intake and obviously if its causing any other issues then cut back or knock off altogether
Hot sauce everyday wont kill you or else they would put that on the bottle lol :P
And yeah i just read that article and it was crap
If you want some good fitness and nutrition websites just send me a quick PM and ill give em up0 -
Yep, you can eat spicy EVERY meal, if you like it :-) It's thought to have mediative effects on blood sugar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsaicin#Medical
As for the ulcer comment, many (perhaps most) are caused by a common bacterial infection http://www.explorebiology.com/documents/EXCR_SCIAM-BacteriaBehindUlcers.pdf
theoatmeal.com captures my personal feelings about hot sauce in this comic http://theoatmeal.com/comics/sriracha0 -
Hot sauce is your friend. It is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy.
That being said, I usually only have it about once a day. It IS very high in sodium. Make sure that you drink plenty of water (which you should be doing anyway) and don't use the whole bottle in one sitting.
My doctor said to just use it once a day and only on one item. Seems to work for me. I get the flavor without over-doing it on my sodium intake for the day.0 -
I grow my own jalapeno and habanero peppers (and other veggies).
I make my own hot sauce (no salt added). I use lots of peppers, tomatoes, garlic, cumin, onion, lime and cilantro. I also grow: bhut jolokia, and trinid scorpion peppers (2 of the hottest peppers). Sometimes I add one of those to a batch of salsa, but I usually dry and grind them into powder. I also have friends who like to prove how tough they are by eating them whole, but I don't.
Basically I eat spicy foods all the time and don't have a problem with it. Salsa has lots of good nutritional value (esp. potassium).
I add salsa to lots of my food, but I find a great snack is: baked tortilla chips (24 bite sized rounds is 140 cal. and 110 sodium). and 1 cup of homemade salsa (36 cal., 4 sodium and 272 potaassium). (total = 176 cal., 114 sodum and 272 potassium)
It's filling and there are lots of worse things you could snack on!
Once a week I take the wife out to eat at her favorite vietnamese (Pho) restaraunt.... we use a ton of sirachi sauce on everything (Pho, Vermicelli, Spring Rolls), but that's a cheat meal, so I'm not too worried about the sodium.0 -
1) Do you like hot sauce?
If the answer is no, then the answer to your question is never.
If the answer is yes, then the answer is "Whenever you feel like it".
You aren't going to contribute anything significant to your energy expenditure through hot sauce dosing.0 -
Tabasco has less sodium than cholula. That is all.0

Some studies have shown that spicy food increases metabolism. Of course you can make a study show just about anything you want it to show, so how much faith you put into that is entirely up to you. I eat hot sauce because I love it. Not the insane heat I was once able to scarf, but some good, flavorful chipotle sauce, yum.
As has been pointed out, some of it can have an insane amount of sodium in it. You can, however, find brands with no or low sodium. There are entire stores dedicated to nothing but hot sauce, find one and explore.0 -

I have read from several sources that cayenne pepper actually helps to burn more calories, very few more though. I wonder if it has anything to do with all that sweating when we eat hot spices.0 -
as often as your bung hole can take it.0

How much do you put in your meal every time? My cholula sauce has about 90 mg sodium per serving, about a tbl spoon? Half of that amount is already making my food taste like heaven.0

I put hot sauce on everything! Just the way it is in the south.0
