Ladies, during that time of the month how do you stay motivated/fight the cravings. I usually just want to sit on the couch pigging out all week. I still want to be healthy and such. I just cant find the motivation to exercise or not give into the cravings

I get pain, bad pain. Not always but when I do its debilitating. I use Yoga during that happy time of the month. It helps relieve cramps and stress and I try my best to stay to natural food that doesn't contain high salt. I avoid it anyways, but that helps.
I make sure that I am eating 6 small meals a day and I try to stay out of the kitchen until I HAVE to go in there so I don't touch anything. Having MFP also makes me guilty because I have to track the snack. ( Disclaimer: I am a rep, but I do love the product). I use Herbalife Snack Defense too so that it helps curb my carb love as well as their tea concentrate to help out.-1 -
I just don't give in to the cravings or the desire to be lazy. *shrug*
These threads confuse me - women have been having periods for a very long time now) and I'm pretty sure that most people don't just crawl into a hole during "that time of the month" and do nothing. They go on with their lives. You can still do whatever you want while you're menstruating - eat healthy, exercise (yes, even swim! *gasp*) and live your life.0 -

For the motivation, come here or put pictures of what you want to look like in places you will be on a routine basis.
For the cravings, don't FIGHT them...just don't over-do. So for me (my week this week. Oh joy.) I had a couple tablespoons of peanut butter and a couple tablespoons of dark chocolate chips last night for my dessert...(most of the time it's one of each, but I had the calories to spare and...well i was PMSing)...so still enjoy the things your body is craving, just don't go hog wild on them.
For the working out, it actually makes me feel better to go. I always feel sluggish and gross that week and the week preceeding it...but after I work out, I get at least a little energy back.
Hope this helps. You can always come here to the forums for motivation and encouragement too!0 -
Pay day? Mortgage due? Flipping the mattress?
Arrrgh, I'm so lost.0 -
Get off the couch.
For real. It's harder to eat crap and be lazy if you're outside...or walking around the mall...or going to the gym...
Plus, you will feel better and all the other crap that comes along with the period may lessen.
If you want to have something you are "craving", measure it, eat it, log it and go on with your day.
You have to choose to want to be healthier more than to eat worthless calories that will not help you feel better.0 -

This^^^^^ I will give this a shot. I have always been told to not give in at all0 -

Just be sure to log it in MFP. I mean...at the end of the day I usually have the calories left for a bedtime snack or dessert. Many people say not to eat dessert or sweets at all...I know that is not realistic for me but I snack smart. Dark chocolate will also kick that chocolate craving much easier than milk chocolate and with less of it too.
Best of luck!0 -
You gotta snack, just snack smart. The only thing I hate about this time is the scale change until it flips back then all is right with the world again. :laugh:0

I'm finally starting to get the hang of the motivation thing, as I feel your "pain" as well. Usually my energy level gets punched in the stomach and doesn't recover for about 3-4 days, along with extreme, um, upper girly parts soreness. XD
Now I pre-plan. I try to keep my sodium lower the week before and up my water intake. I have several fitness classes that I like to attend at the gym, so I make that part of my schedule. Exercise helps the sluggish feeling and cramping for me. As for cravings, try to find healthy alternatives to your triggers. (Saltl;y, Sweet, etc.) I have dark chocolate squares in a drawer at home and purchased organic multigrain tortilla chips if my salt tooth is screaming.
Try experimenting and see what works for you.

That's kind of a ****ty reply. What's confusing? Some women have horrible cramps.0 -
I simply don't understand why at least weekly a thread like this needs to be posted. If you are incapacitated by your menstrual cycle, go to your doctor - that's not normal. If you're not incapacitated, suck it up and go do your daily activities. Now, if this is the OP's first menstrual cycle I will retract my statements, however, I sincerely doubt it is.0

I tell myself that my workouts count double when im chasing the cotton mouse. my metabolism is slightly raised and if im eating clean and working out too- well that just makes me awesome, doesnt it, as opposed to lame and sitting on the couch.0

Depends on your periods.
For some women they are light, pain free and totally not a problem. For others it is totally different.
For me my average month is:
2 days light bleeding but not feeling too bad
4 days of can't leave the house for longer than 30 minutes (thank goodness I'm able to work from home) as it is that heavy. Most months it's accompanied by bad stomach cramps
6 days of the bleeding not being so bad, but by this point I am very anaemic and starting to get a migraine due to not being able to get a proper nights sleep during the previous 4 nights
5 days no longer bleeding but still feeling naff due to being anaemic
4 days of feeling okay
7 days of really bad PMT, and you really need to feel sorry for my husband during this time!
Then back to the beginning again
As for the cravings, don't fight them but try to limit the damage. A small amount of 70% chocolate deals with the chocolate craving and is healthier than a multipack of Mars bars.0
