Can a nutritionist help with weight loss goals?

I've been considering seeing a nutritionist to possibly provide me some assistance with my eating habits. Sometimes, I'm pretty good with my food intake, but more often than necessary, it's not always good.
I need to make a significant change in my eating habits if I want to lose weight and make a lfetime change for health reasons, but I feel that some form of guidance would be beneficial and possibly make it an easy transition. Therefore I was wondering has anyone seen or sees a nutritionist and if so, has it helped you?
