Does anyone know if a really good treatment for scars? My husband was bit in the face by a mastiff last month and has 2 scars under his eye, one on his bottom lip, and one on his chin. They are dark pink in color and raised... he's worried they won't go away. Is there anything that can help?
Thanks in advance! :flowerforyou:

I have a scar on my forehead where I had a skin cancer spot removed earlier this year. I haven't put anything on it, as it's my "proud scar" if you will, But lots of people have told me if i want to get rid of it, use vitamin E oil. It's worth a try!:flowerforyou:

I've heard of vitmamin E oil
I had thyroid surgery a few years back and had a nasty scare on my neck (not raised, but discolored)
I heard through a friend to try Magic Egyptian cream from Whole Foods...it worked WONDERS
    Good luck

Vitamin E oil!! I was in a car accident that left me with a scar on my forehead. The insurance company sent me to a plastic surgeon before they settled with me. He said that the best thing to do was rub vitamin E oil into the scar a few times a day. If you can't find the oil, just get vitamin E gel caps and squeeze the oil out of them. I still have a scar, but it isn't very noticeable. It is just a white line and it is not raised. The scar is about 14 years old now.

Having had a facial injury that required major surgery I can tell you the face is some of the fastest healing skin on the body. I would give it at least 4 months before trying anything. If it's still bad enough after that...well I'm not sure what to do, but give it some time.

In the mean time just tell everyone he got in a fight defending your honor.

That's encouraging, I am willing to try something in the meantime though. What worries me is how raised the scars are.
  • I used Mederma for my pregnancy stretch marks. It is also used for scars. It didn't make them go away but it did lighten them and make them less noticeable. You have to use it everyday 3-4 times a day for a while tho.

    Yeah, I thought about Mederma.

What do you guys think about the fact that the scars are raised?

Vit E oil didn't work for me...
BUT now that I think about it right after surgery the scar was a little red/pink and raised then it flattened out and became a nasty dark brown

Does the magic Egyptian cream have vitamin E in it?

Plastic surgeon told me to use the Mederma on my scars because they started to keloid(sp?) - I figure if he said to use it he's seen it work but my scars are concealed so I didn't bother. Over time, mine have faded tremendously.

I have some wicked scars on my hand and arm from wrist surgery, and one thing I was told to do is to massage the scars as soon as it feels okay to do so. You have to wait until the stitches have been removed and the skin heals, but then you put vitamin E oil (or lotion) on them and knead, knead, knead! It helps to break up the adhesions below the surface, so the tissue doesn't "clump together" while healing.

I used to do it while sitting in church, during meetings at the office, while watching TV, etc. Makes the skin red for a while, but it does help.

Talk to your pharmacist too. There is apparently some new technologies involving silicone that help to prevent keloid formation and reduce scarring.

    I found one example here....http://www.kelocote.com/

Not to sound too pessimistic but a co-worker of mine also had a dog bite her in the face about 6 months ago. She ended up having to have surgery to get rid of the raised part of the scar. She used vitamin E after the surgery and it looks as if she never had a scar.

No, I appreciate your input. His parents think he needs to see a plastic surgeon. How long did she wait before having surgery to remove the raised part?

She waited 4 months...just to see if it would fade or flatten out. She just fully recovered about 3 weeks ago...and it looks wonderful.

I went to the dermotologist today and had a spot on my leg looked at, and asked her about my hubby's scars. She said silicone. You can buy it in the store near the Mederma and stuff. I told her he has been using the Vit E and she said that's good too.

    Thanks for your advice everyone!

Keep me posted about which cream works best.

Silicone gel is what you want to prevent getting a keloid. I used it after my leg surgery.

I did not think Mederma would work but my daughter used in on a scar she had from an infected eye brow piercing. Now you can't even tell there was a scar unless you know where to look. I was surprised at how well it worked.
  • I don't know if it is available in the states but when I had scars from 3rd degree burns on my legs I used a product called bio-oil and now theres nothing! My gran used it on skin graft scars with great results (hmm accident prone family aren't we?) and my friend used it on a facial scar also with great results

    good luck!

    (just found the website http://www.bio-oil.info/)

ps I go Friday to have a spot on my leg checked out for skin cancer :frown: My mom just found out she has skin cancer, and mine resembles her spot :frown: What was yours like, how did you know you needed to go?

I had a dark mole on the side of my forehead that I could clearly see was changing shape and getting bigger. I went to my family doctor (EX family doctor) and he just kept telling me it was fine and let me be on my way. But I knew something wasn't right, as it was getting much bigger in size. So I went to a walk in clinic and the doctor booked me in to have it removed as just a precaution. I went in in January and had it removed, and about 2 weeks later the surgeon phoned and told me it was melanoma, and that I needed to have a second surgery to make sure none of the cells were left in the first surgery. So in February I had my second surgery, by which time the few cells that had been missed has multiplied. He was able to get them all out and now I go to the cancer clinic every 6 months for the next 3 years - basically cos my family doctor is an idiot.

I'm 28 years old and going to the cancer clinic. For anyone who thinks it can't happen to them, it most defiantly can.

I try and make going to the cancer clinic something positive by using it as a 6 month way in (I lost 25 pounds from my first appointment to my latest!)

Melanoma & non-melanoma spots are a possibility if you have one or more of the "ABCD's":

A - Asymmetrical. Moles and spots should be symmetrical,

B - Border. If the spot has a light or dark border around it, keep an eye on it.

C - Color. Spots and Moles should be one color.

D - Depth. If the spot of mole is raised above the skin, it's worth checking.

Mine was asymmetrical and had 2 colors in it.

Sorry to rant on about this. :blushing: It's something I am very passionate about sharing, as I had to seek out what was really going on by going to different people, and I don't want anyone to ever catch melanoma too late if I can help it!

Ps- Melanoma was the reason I began my weight loss journey. I realized I was given a chance and this is the only body I have, so I best be taking care of it. On top of that, I have started to try new things that I was always to scared to do before.

Never apologize for warning people about melanoma!

I had one removed when I was 24 -- 19 years ago. My friends and coworkers might get tired of my "wear sunscreen" rants, but if I can help one person avoid what I went through, it's worth it.

    God bless!

I took vitamin E and put it on the scar. I think you treat it inside and outside. It did take several minths after I quit putting it on the scar and just took it before it disappeared. One day I noticed it was gone--it was pretty large and on my back, so I didn't look at it everyday.

Give it some time if it's only been a month. If it's a raised scar, you might have some success with a mild steroid cream.

Thank you for sharing. :flowerforyou: The dermotologist said the spot on my leg is basically just broken or clustered blood vessels. She tested it by simply pressing on it. The spot disappeared and came right back. She said that's a simple way to test red spots. I am having a mole under my arm removed. She said it probably was nothing to be worried about since it has been there for a long long time and never changed, but I could have it removed if I wanted. Better to be safe than sorry. Having it removed Dec. 18th. Cancer sucks and I am absolutely terrified of it. So, you are clear of melanoma now?

I go to the girly doctor every 6 months and never complain about it. I came very close to having cervical cancer almost 3 years ago. My doctor at the time acted like it was no big deal. 4 months after my surgery to have the abnormal cells removed, my PAP came back abnormal again. The dr. said it was ok, and they would see me in another 4 months. Really? That's okay to you? Not me. I had always gone for my tests on a yearly basis. It took ONE YEAR for abnormal cells to form to stage 4 cell dysplasia. It comes back abnormal again after JUST having surgery, and you want me to wait around another 4 months knowing that it's already abnormal?!! Why wouldnt you do something about it NOW?!! I was so lucky to happen to mention something to the lady that cuts my hair and found out that she used to seee same doctor I was at the time. She was trying to get pregnant and that doctor was doing treatments that were actually making it LESS likely that she would get pregnant. She recommended me to her new doctor and I made an appointment with him that day. I had all my records sent over to him and he told me that he sat and read through them all before my appointment. He went into detail explaining what was going on with me, what the surgery did, what he would have done different, everything my other doctor never even cared to discuss. I just recently decided to start going every 6 months instead of 4. He would let me come every 2 weeks if that's what I felt comfortable with. All my tests have come back normal since going to this new doctor, and I trust him to do what is right. You should always do what you feel is right. Good for you for switching doctors. (Talk about rambling!)
