  • I took a Learn to Walk 5 km clinic with the Running Room in 2007. I thought I would never be able to do it but I walked my first 5 km in May 2007 in 43 minutes.

I took a Learn to Run 5 km clinic with the Running Room in 2008. I ran my first 5 km in 2008 in 40 minutes. Thought I was done. A month later my father died very suddenly from a heart attack. Then one month after that my beloved sister-in-law was told she had pancreatic cancer. A very short seven weeks later she passed away. A month after that my psychologist passed away from cancer. I was derailed with grief for eight months.

I started running again in January 2009 and it has helped me with through the grieving process. I "talk" to my loved ones and to God as I run. In August, 2009, I took a Learn to Run 10 km clinic with the Running Room. I ran my very first 10 kms race on October 18 in 90 minutes. I finished last but I was so proud of myself. It was a very, very, very hilly course but I did it!!!

    I just turned 57 October 29 and I am a runner. WOW!!!!

I always said I would NEVER be a runner because I am a larger woman. I have learned how to breathe properly and I am totally addicted to running. I now run every other day and I am slowing becoming a smaller woman. Plus, my heart is getting stronger. I love it. I highly recommend it.

I am now training for a half-marathon race next May 30.

I started c25k last spring but the walking, running, walking killed me. I ended up mapping out a 1 mile loop and started off running as far as I could and then I walked the rest. Every week I tried to run a little more until I was able to run the entire mile without stopping. I think my first mile I ran in around 15 minutes. I can now run a mile in around 9 minutes.

I ran my 1st 5k last month in 31:17 and was 36th out of 54 and some odd runners. I had the best time and am now training for a 10k next June. My husband and I have started running longer runs on Sundays and we actually ran 6 miles this last Sunday. It took me 1 hour and 7 minutes but I finished it.

Just keep adding time to your runs and you'll get there. I never thought it possible a year ago that I would ever be able to run at all, let alone a 5k run. When you do run your 1st race just start out in the back and try not to keep up with the seasoned runners or you'll get tired fast. If you wear a stop watch wear it at the run so you can keep yourself on your own pace.

    Good luck!

    Great post!

I walked my first 5K back in February, appropriately called the "Freeze Your Bunz 5K." It would have been really fun, except the trail hadn't been cleared of the snow and ice, so I had to shuffle my way along to keep from falling. I couldn't believe all of the people that ran and seemed not to care about potentially falling!

After that, I started training for a 5k and got to the point where I could run the entire distance on my treadmill, then suddenly gave up for no good reason. This week, I just started the Couch to 5K program and am looking forward to doing the "Freeze Your Bunz" in February, as well as one for a non-profit that I work with in June.

I also cannot believe that I can run at all. Even though I was a skinny kid, I never ran the mile in gym because I figured I could walk it just as fast. Now, I enjoy running and am striving to continue to add time and run faster miles.

Have fun with it and good luck!!
