New to Running - Signed up for a 5K!!!

So I enjoy what running (more like slight jogging) I do at the gym but am no where near being a runner. My friend just completed a 5K and she inspired me to sign up for one myself. I will start training for the race on Monday! From what I have read both on here and other websites is that I should probably train outside rather than on the treadmill at the gym. The race is October 14th and I was just wondering what tips, tricks, advice, etc. you all might have for me as I embark on this journey.

Thanks!!!

Good for you for making the leap!

I've started C25K several times, but got too gung-ho, and ended up dropping out due to knee or hip pain. So...my advice? Take it slow. Follow the routine. Challenge yourself, but don't go all-out and get hurt.

You should get fitted for running shoes. I put it off until recently and can't figure out why I waited so long. They've made a WORLD of difference. Totally worth the investment.

May I suggest checking out Zombies, RUN! by Six to Start for Iphone, Ipod, and Android. It's a radio-play type simulation that uses GPS or accelerometer to track your runs, but giving you a good story to distract you.

    Good luck!!

Yup. Good shoes and Couch to 5K, outside if at all possible. The dreadmill sucks.

I started the program in October and ran my first 5K in December and my first 10K in March. Now I am training for a half marathon in October.

    You can do it!!!!
