ok i did w1d2 today of c25k...........everything from my knees down hurt... my feet always hurt after running or a good walk. but today my shins hurt and had a slight knot that felt like i had a bruise on both legs almost like i ran into a coffee table..... i been reading up on shin splints.........but how do iknow that's what i could have and not just regular muscle soreness from a new routine... i been massaging the knots for the past hour... the knot has disappeared as well as the pain... let me also throw out that i'm currently running in shoes that are a size too big and are not running shoes... i will be getting running shoes next week....i've also read that concrete is not good so i will also say that i run on an outside basketball/tennis court.... so opinions are greatly apprecieated

I dealt with shin splints when I first got back into running. I didn't have any knots, just pain running up and down the shin area. The only real way to know if you have shin splints (or stress fractures) is to go see your doctor. I AM NOT a doctor but this is what I did and now I don't have any problems...
Went to a running store & got fitted for proper running shoes! This is a must do in my eyes.
Iced my shins after any workout and sometimes before bed. If they were hurting, I would ice them.
Took Ibprophen to help with inflammation
I didn't run for about 2 weeks. Instead I used an elliptical and I also did laps in the pool at my gym. After about a week I did start to do some walking.
I would frequently be seen at home walking on my heels.. This helps strengthen the shins.
I also make sure I do a lot of stretching before & after my workouts.
If your legs are really bothering or if they continue to bother you after a week or two of taking it easy then I would highly recommend seeing a doctor. Stress fractures take a long time to heal. Like I said, I am not a doctor. I just followed the advice of others who had shin splints. You can also find some good info on shin splints on YouTube.
