How is this possible?

I feel like there is no way this is true but it is.

For a long time my weight was stable at around 130 (give or take a couple pounds). I was pretty stressed out at work and was hovering at the top end of that around 132. Then I had to travel for work for 10 days and added 2 vacation days to the end of that. when I got back from that trip I found myself at 138!

First of all how is it it even possible that I gained 6 pounds in 12 days wouldn't I have had to have eaten an obscene amount of extra calories? I wasn't pigging out I actually went to the supermarket for one 5 day leg of the trip and bought healthy snacks (apples bananas almonds cheese and oatmeal for breakfast) and tons of water The next 5 days I was a t conference and had to walk 10 minutes one way to and from my room to where the conference was. Yes I had to eat out a lot but I knew that was going to make me gain weight and I tried to order healthy to minimize that.

What's worse? It won't budge! It's been 2 weeks and I've stared a new workout and been eating 1200-1600 calories a day...nothing! How is this even possible?

Check out my diary if you want. I just started earlier this week but my diet for the week before was very much like Tuesday which was below my MBR which I found was actually 1377 so 1200 was a little low and I upped my goals to reflect that.

It's almost impossible for that weight to be all or even mostly fat. One pound of fat would mean 3500 stored excess calories. Over 12 days, to gain 6 pounds would mean that you would have had to eat (and absorb) 1750 calories over maintenance every day. That'd be around 4000 calories per day. Most likely you gained a little bit of fat (2 lbs maybe) and the rest is water weight. The water weight will actually stick around for a bit if you just started a new exercise and diet routine because your body needs to adjust. Give it another 2 weeks and you should see results.
  • Could you be retaining water? Sometimes I gain pounds of weight within days. Even my pants won't fit anymore! People at work start speculating about whether or not I'm pregant. I used to beat myself up over it, but over time I realized that I was just bloated (usually meant I was about to menstruate). A few weeks later, I'd be back to my normal weight. My pants fit again. People shut up. Maybe this is the same for you?

The first time I gained a lot of weight quickly it was while I was traveling for work. But it took my four months!

That isn't fat (mostly). It has to be water and bloat. Give it a few days and see what happens. You may also have gained a pound or two. If you've been stable, watch what you're eating, exercise a little, and it should come back down.

And watch that traveling food! My mistake was eating more meat and more sauces and more starches/desserts because I never ate out and someone else was paying. And they were taking me to GOOD restaurants for three meals a day! Watch it.

Traveling in general is risky business in terms of weight loss, particularly because most who are on a diet fail to adhere to it while "on the road". Constant eating out, which means foods are prepared with extra sauces, fats, and calories are almost always higher than foods you normally prepare for yourself.

Simply put, you're not in control of your environment.

High sodium and excess calories. Of the 8 lbs in scale weight, I'd bet a good chunk of that is water weight from the excess sodium. You know how you ate, so if you were over your calorie goals, it's very likely some of that gain is also actual weight gain.

Thanks guys! That's almost exactly what I thought. Sure a couple pounds might have been really weight gain and the rest had to be water.

But I've been back for 3 weeks Sunday! So why is it sticking around?

I had my time of month right after I got back even after that no change. I knew I needed to lose the weight so Immediately started watching my white carbs. I started working out again and have done crossfit and bootcamp classes (then some time on the elliptical at home when I'm too sore or tired) so maybe I'm retaining water as my muscles strengthen and repair...?? maybe?
