ACNE!

Maybe I missed something, but the person that posted this question did not say whether she had a few blemishes or serious acne. I specifically said that I never had serious acne and was giving minor advice about how I deal with oily sensitive skin to prevent the minor blemishes that are a part of anyone's life. Minor blemishes are not a serious problem, and do not require serious medical treatment or serious medications. I can't use pro-active because it is too irritating.
I wash my face with a basic cleanser. I exfoliate with a gentle, but effective mask from an esthetician or dermatologist office. I use B.Kamins blemish gel. I use an oil free moisturizer. And I use natural zinc oxide for spf. I also get good sleep, manage stress, exercise, drink water, eat healthy foods such as veggies and nuts (instead of supplements). None of that is dangerous advice. I have had skin for all of my life. I've been to dermatologists. And I've never had a facial. That's just my experience. It may not work for others. We all need to find what works for us. Also, occasionally a little antibiotic ointment helps if needed (for me).
And thanks to the advice on here I am going to look into the Oil of Olay spf.0 -
Never in the history of my life have I heard of Mary Kay, Clinique, witch hazel and baking soda leaving irreversible scarring and know people who use all of the above and who have been using them for 20+ years. But I have heard plenty of horror stories from the *kitten* my cousins were given to use from the dermatologists offices and several of my friends teenagers faces are all messed up now and red and burning and super dry from the stuff they've used that was prescribed to them.
I have a friend who uses the pink toner and the huge *kitten* bar soap made by Clinique and has been using them for like 20 years literally, and her face is immaculate and amazing shape for someone her age, 44. I am not a professional and maybe these days all the above mentioned stuff is made different and messes you up, but I have never seen it and know people still using it all. Save your money and use Crest toothpaste at night on your zits while you're sleeping, the stuff is amazing and takes the red inflammation out over night and reduces the zit in size. The red is mostly always gone when you wake up.
There is plenty of valid information on the internet. I agree not to self diagnose your symptoms and assume you have something until you get checked out by a doctor, but in my family and friend circle they have experienced some of the worst issues they've ever had with their faces by using stuff from the dermatologist, and every one of them has stopped going and stopped using the prescribed treatments. They took a month and a half off and used some Nutrogena soap and then all went to using Proactiv and Murad which are affordable. You can get a 3 piece kit of Proactiv for $20 and I am sure most teenagers can scrape that up. They don't have the hundreds that it cost to go to the dermatologist or would probably rather spend it on iTunes.0 -
Here's advice from a professional dermatologist: IGNORE ALL OF THEM. They're all completely off. Stay away from Clinique, Mary Kay, etc. Proactive works but all of its components are available over-the-counter for a fraction of a cost. DO NOT RUB no matter what. NO alcohol, baking soda, witch hazel, NONE OF THOSE. ABSOLUTELY NO FACIALS unless you go to a facility run at a dermatology clinic, not a 'spa'. Doing any of the recommended here will most likely result in irreversible scarring. GO SEE A DOCTOR, preferably a dermatologist. And lastly, be prepared to follow PROFESSIONAL instructions for at least 12 weeks for best results. Going now and expecting clear skin in two weeks is NOT going to happen.
I'm not kidding about any of this. This is what I do for a living. Do not seek medical advice on internet forums. I've seen most atrocious results when well meaning people give most misleading and uneducated 'advice'.
The thing is..some of us did see professional dermatologists such as yourself.
And nothing WORKED. Not until I finally got ACCUTANE. I don't even think it's available anymore. I went from 14 to 21 with horrific cystic acne using every thing under the sun that the derm prescribed. Not until I went to a different derm and was more confident in myself to demand that I didn't want to f**K around anymore..that I wanted Accutane(I had done my own research in the age before the internet and know all about the health risks and birth defects but since no guy would be seen with me, that was never an issue) that i got what I wanted. I know the side effects were " depression." but heck...being called pizza face from 14- 18, sitting by oneself all through high school, being called ugly because of acne..wow..depression.
And then accutane cleared me up. For 10 years I ddin't even have one small breakout.
Then pregnancy hit and my hormones went hogwild again. couldn't take accutane and the rest of the stuff you derms recommended or prescribed didn't work.
I bet you don't even know about how LOW CARBING actually helps clear up the skin.
Yup..back in my high school days I had my stupid dermatologist tell me to quit eating candy.Back then I barely ate candy. but i wa s eating "healthy " rice and breads...
Couldn't believe when I cut it out just for weight loss one of the effects was no acne.
Wow.
Keep prescribing those meds doc.
I am one ANGRY patient that suffered. The overthe counter stuff was probbably just as effective as anything my derm gave me..which was all very ineffective for me until I discovered that cutting carbs worked.
Granted I don't do that anymore since my breakouts are now nonexistent. but when it starts up again, I am cutting carbs..0 -
Buy Murad or Proativ. They sell Murad at Ulta stores and Sephora. Proavtiv online, airport vending machines and kiosks in the mall. I don't have acne but I had it off and on a few years back in my 30's of all things. I'd get two pimples in the same area every month or so. I have tried all that Clearilsil and other things and they're just not good enough and don't work unless you use them all the time. Once you stop it comes back. You need something stronger that you don't need a prescription for. Murad and Proavtiv work and eventually get the Ph levels in your skin back to normal and eventually you won't have a zit again. May take you a couple of months to one year but its worth it. I used the kits and I used them daily for I think about 7 months and haven't had any sign of any pimple ever since then. My friends daughter had acne so bad she quit school at age 14. I didn't see her until her 15th birthday and was absolutely shocked by what Proactiv did for her skin. When I say she had acne I mean it, and it covered about 80% of her face and forehead, gone after 11 months of Proactiv. She used just the 3 piece kit with the face wash, toner and repair cream moisturizer. The stuff is amazing. I too have used it. I don't know why I chose to stay with Murad to be honest with you.
My vote for Murad! I am an esthetician, and use Murad at the spa I work for. It is a wonderful product which is well researched and effective. Dr Murad is a dermatologist as well as a pharmacist, so he understands both the medical needs of skin and the pharmaceutical side. (This is rare.)
In their line, they have a Rapid Response acne treatment kit which can get you started for less than $30.0 -

I agree that if ur having acne problems u should see a dermatologist if possible. I did. I was put on an antibiotic that did work. However, it upset my stomach, and was too expensive for me at the time. I haven't read all the replies above, so pardon if I repeat someone else's cure. I started noticing that after a trip to the Gulf of Mexico and swimming in the ocean my acne started clearing up quickly. Since that trip I ordered sea salts to bathe with. It helps me a lot. Take a couple of sea salt baths a week. The rest of the week showering.0 -

Accutane is only prescribed now as a last resort because of the side effects. Personality changes and permanent thinning of the skin among others. It has it's place in the worst case scenario, but only after nothing else works.
And I don't agree with the above poster that Spa facials are bad.I perform them daily and underwent a rigorous education/training process to perform them safely and effectively. If you go to a good esthetician, they will not harm your skin. One of my clients has a nasty scar on her nose because a dermatologist told her he could decrease her pore size by taking a scalpel to it. Yeah, he cut the pore in half. Yeah, that made it look so much better...0 -
1) Wash face before and after sleep and workouts. Opinions differ on what to use, but I find a very simple soap is best.
2) Use an oil free moisturizer with spf, every time.
3) Gently exfoliate as often as necessary - this depends on skin regeneration rates, but for me every third day works well.
4) Treat individual flare-ups with a concentrated acne product or tea tree oil.
5) Find a mask you like (you can even make one) and use it 1-2x a week.
6) MOST IMPORTANT - don't pick. Really. If you have a painful whitehead, sterilize and do an actual extraction (see youtube).
Diet is a huge factor too. Eating healthfully resolves a lot of people's acne issues. If all of that isn't working, consider talking to a dermatologist.0 -
I'm in my 30s but still have to deal w acne. These are the things I find help:
change your pillowcase every night
wash with cetaphil antibacterial bar, not too hot water
use a shampoo that does not make the hair "smooth" sleek, etc, they make it worse, I can usually tell if the shampoo is making it worse cause my hairline will break out
I use a prescription serum type lotion morning and night under my makeup
Never sleep w makeup on
Don't rub the skin a lot when washing, avoid astrigents, don't touch your face0 -
Oh yes, and take a shower and wash face w cetaphil soap as soon as you can after working out0
-
Number 1, the most important thing; Don't over wash your face. In the morning, wash it with warm water and wash cloth, at night use a non astringent cleaner. Alcohol will dry out and irritate your skin and can cause worse problems with acne. Clean gently your skin is already inflamed and scrubbing won't help it.
I use the "Yes to Cucumber/Blueberries/Tomato" line of natural, paraben free cleaners (I can't use soap, it makes my skin dry and I break out more). Also, if you have large pores, I swear by Lancome's Visionnaire (yes, it's stupidly expensive, but it makes my pores shrink up and moisturizes as well, I haven't found anything else that works as well).
Moisturizing, without adding the grease of lotions and some really poorly made facial products, helps so much and will do wonders for your skin. Stay away from the "Yes To" moisturizing line, they are extremely greasy, their cleaners are good though.
Drink water. If you're on the first week of your diet and eating "cleaner", your face will break out. I don't know if its toxins or what but it always seems to happen that first week, to me at least.
Do NOT use Proactiv. No matter how much they promote it to work (it will for the first few weeks because it has a lot of alcohol in it) it will make your face raw and irritated in the long run. Haven't had luck with Clinique, Mary Kay, or any other brands (aside from Lancome, "Yes To", Dermalogica (very expensive and an OK product) and Eclos (its a cheaper alternative to Lancome, but it definitely doesn't work as well), they all make my face really oily.
If nothing else works, go to a dermatologist... sometimes you just can't treat acne with regular means.0 -

You shouldn't tell someone not to use something because it didn't work for you. My cousins have been using Proactiv for a long time and their skin is amazing, smooth, soft, clear, never raw etc... What doesn't work for you may work for others or vise versa. I tired that Yes To Carrots face cleanser for instance and it was the worst product I've ever tried and dried my face out. So what doesn't work for me may work for others. Dermalogica is an excellent product and have friends who use that also. I agree with you on the Lancome though, they make the best everything. Especially lipstick and mascara.
Edited: I hope you don't think I am picking on you btw. That's not at all what I am doing. I re-read my post and some people may take it as rude. That's not the case here0 -

I didn't mean to sound know-it-all and didn't take your post as a picking on me post nor rude . You are correct, not everything works for everyone the same, I just never had success with Proactiv due to the high concentration of alcohol (my skin dries out crazy fast and takes heaps of moisturizers to bring it back to normal) and I wanted to share that, though I didn't do it in a good way. I haven't tried Yes to Carrots and completely forgot this evil thing from their line (I've heard a lot of negative things about Yes to Carrots and Tomatoes). I've only used Blueberry and Cucumber (only cleaners/facial wipes, their moisturizers suck and are super greasy *ick*).
Dermalogica is nice, but for the price I wasn't super impressed with them, but I did like their scrubs.
And, Lancome is evil incarnate. So, so good, but so bad for my wallet0 -

I did not think you were acting like a know it all, so don't think that either please Thats why I edited my comment to let you know that I was not picking on you because some people may read things the wrong way. I apologize if you got the impression that I thought that. I have never tried the Yes To products and was so mad when my grandmother insisted that I save money and get that Yes To Carrots face wash. She went on and on about it and how I'm wasting my money on this or that lol. I have the worlds worst dry skin and the carrot stuff made me feel like a loofah after one use lol. I tried it the next night just to make sure and then tossed it. For me it doesn't work but she loves it. And she is frugal lol and tight with her money.
I agree for a lot of people Dermalogica is on the expensive side but that stuff seems to do wonders, but again we all have different skin so I totally understand where you're coming from. You can't go wrong with Lancome imo, and if you have to scrimp on something else in order to get it, it's worth it. You're still pretty young, so start now by keeping your face in shape lol. I'm feel fortunate to have the skin that I have and look younger than I really. I don't say that to be vain, its just I get carded every where I go and people make me pull out my ID when I tell them I am 43. I'm not by any means saying I look 20 lol but I have good skin for my age mostly because I've been a vegetarian for 18 years, I do not smoke, drink alcohol, sit in the sun and I drink about a gallon of water a day. My mom rode my *kitten* my entire life about my face and what I put on it and I just never forgot that.0 -
It really comes down to exfoliating (I'm with the people who do the baking soda thing, just mix it with water and apply) and moisturizing. If your skin isn't exfoliated it's easier for pores to clog, and if you don't moisturize enough your skin gets dry and over-produces oil to replace the moisture, which can cause acne as well. As for what you use, that generally involves some trial and error, unfortunately.0

I have PCOS and have had acne for years!!!!! The best thing i have ever done is go on Spironolactone which addresses the hormones associated with it. It takes a few months but very worth it! For me, it gets better the less acne specific stuff I use. I switched to a gentle cleanser and moisturizer instead of ones for acne and saw a huge improvement. I also use the Mark Kay Tme Wise set, although I am not worried about wrinkles, it seems to help me.0

I had acne starting at 20, that didn't clear up as I thought it would. I tried most of what's been posted here, and the low-dose antibiotics did work but I felt they were dangerous to take long-term. So I went to a naturopath, mostly because I hadn't tried that yet and I was trying to cover my bases before I resigned myself to prescriptions forever. He told me my liver was stressed from some bad behavior in my early 20's, and that I was getting acne due to toxins getting pushed out wherever my body could push them, basically, especially whenever I overloaded the system with sugar. (That's my take on what he said, it was quite a while ago.)
I took the herbal supplements he prescribed even though it seemed ridiculous and they made me burp. I cleared right up and stayed clear. 2 years later I stopped and the acne never came back, except the occasional pimple a day or two after a sweets binge.
I was pretty surprised to hear (and later learn it was true since his methods worked) it wasn't hormonal. I was also pretty surprised to see such dramatic changes in my skin from an herbal remedy.0 -
I went to a acne-specialist a year back, because I had horrible acne.
Here's what they prescribed (works for most people):
Preferably use hypoallergenic, gentle stuff. A lot of acne is because of a bad reaction to something or because you are drying out your skin too much, making your skin produce more sebum which results in more break outs.
Don't use too many products on your skin. Simple routine is best.
Have an allergy test done via your doctor.
Definitely don't use anything with alcohol. This is an irritant and will make your skin want to fight back i.e. produce more sebum.
In the mornings:
1. Gentle face wash with salicylic acid or a gentle face wash and then a serum containing salicylic acid.
2. Good moisturizer for sensitive skin, non comedogenic.
3. Non-comedogenic sunscreen above factor 25, specially for the face (have to use this because of the retinol and benzoyl peroxide).
In the evenings:
1. Gentle face wash.
2. Benzoyl peroxide 5%.
3. Either a moisturizer or a serum containing Retinol (vit. A).
(4. Moisturizer)
This has worked absolute wonders on my skin and, by the looks of it, on everyone else who went to this acne clinic.

clean eating works wonders for my acne!
It worked for me too!!!0 -
I had some cystic acne on my cheeks and pretty bad whiteheads on my chin starting at age 19. My doctor tried me on differin gel then antibiotics but as a woman I couldn't take the antibiotics long term and the differin gel was REALLY irritating to my sensitive skin.
I went on Accutane twice after that and yes it definitely works (side effects I had: super thin easy to break skin, SUPER dry lips luckily healed by Aquaphor, regular nosebleeds). My skin went back to how it was originally after the first round of Accutane and hasn't quite got back to that since the second round although I remember my pessimistic derm telling me I would likely need a third round eventually!
Fast forward to now/the past 3-4 years... EVERY kind of sunscreen I wear on my face makes me break out, first on my jawline and then cystic acne on my cheeks. If I don't wear sunscreen, I don't break out... (if anyone has recommendations hook me up lol)
ALMOST EVERY kind of foundation makes me break out... so I end up wearing it when my skin is clear then get zits and can't wear it again. Go figure.
Pretty much every CHEMICAL product you can use on your face breaks me out... ie almost every facewash on the market. I swear by Burts Bees because it's natural and I'm not afraid of abrasive chemicals F***ing up my skin.
Lastly I am on Diane-35 which is a birth control pill that was prescribed to me for acne control. I'm a little scared to see what happens when I decide to go off the pill for baby making purposes, but for now if I avoid the above mentioned things I have clear skin (with the exception of many one or two tiny buggers that don't last longer than a day at TOM).
One last thing... tea tree oil works wonders at clearing up existing zits!!! And it's natural0 -
I never had acne when I was in my teens. I'd get the occasional pimple here and there when I was about to start my period but I was always the girl who got compliments on how lovely my skin was. As soon as I hit 20 everything BLEW UP. I started my first year of university and I guess it was the stress that really got to me. I was getting A LOT of cystic acne and lots of other little bumps that were close to impossible to cover up. For years I have been totally embarrassed and ashamed of my skin. I don't even feel comfortable leaving the house to go to the grocery store without makeup on. In the past week I found a product that actually seems to be working. It's the generic brand of Proactive, called AcneFree. I've only been using it for about 4 days, but my forehead, chin, and left cheek are completely clear now (aside from some scarring). I have some Proactive coming in the mail as well that I will use after I've finished the AcneFree. A friend of mine from this site is also sending me a Murad product called Post-Acne Spot Lightening Gel that has excellent reviews. It should help with the scarring and dark spots left over from my acne that has cleared. I have really high hopes for the products I'm using right now. Here's to hoping they continue to work!0

I started doing masks made with Brewers Yeast, and I take it orally in vegetable juice every day. I just mix the yeast with a bit of water or sometimes even lemon juice and let it dry for 10 minutes. The little active yeasts go to work eating up the bacteria in your pores. When you rinse it off you not only have a nice glow, but your face feels soft. Also, a good exfoliant is baking soda. It also rids noses of black heads. Just put some in your hand and add a bit of water and slough, or even put it on a wet washcloth and go to it. You don't want to do this every day though because your skin needs a chance to regenerate. If you feel you must have a nicer looking container for it, then by all means go out and buy a pretty jar to put it in. It also lasts longer than the box it comes in. Mine always got wet and soggy so I went out and bought a nice glass container for it. Also, a good astringent is Witch Hazel. It doesn't strip your skin like other alcohols do which just aggravate the condition. I am 38 and I always get mistaken for someone much younger. If you need something to remove your mascara with, then mix equal parts of olive oil and witch hazel in a little bottle and put a little on a cotton ball and wipe. I took this tip from makeup guru Kandi Johnson. All of these are pretty inexpensive except the Brewers Yeast. Mine is the Lewis Labs brand and it cost me 18.00 for the can. But it has so many excellent amino acids in it that it even kills my appetite as well. Its just an excellent product all around. Hope this helps. Oh, yeah, and one more thing. Nutrition definitely counts. It takes a while for some things you eat to actually show up on your skin.0

I tried that Acne Free product before and I liked it as well.0

Apriltrainer: I agree with you. I cut out flour, sugar, white pasta and bread and most potatoes, and my skin cleared up tremendously. Also, I can't tell you how many times and various dermatologists I went to who kept me sitting in the waiting room for an hour, only to rush my appointment that I had to pay 140 dollars for in which they couldn't even tell me what my issue was, so instead they prescribed things that didn't even work. I had to solve my own problems.0
-
I've tried several different remedies for acne, from the Neutrogena-type stuff you get in Boots to the prescription Panoxyl gel, and the majority of them have actively made my acne worse. The one thing I have found that works wonders for me and that I now swear by is the Aqua Marina cleanser from Lush. I think it's particularly good for sensitive skin, since it's made with plenty of natural ingredients. It's a tad on the pricey side (although certainly not as much as anything by Lancome or Clinique), but it's worth it since you only need to use a small amount per wash.0

Oh boy. What a great question and one with a lot of answers! When I was a teenager, I was gifted the unfortunate nickname of "Pimple Princess" at one point. Very few products worked. Cystic acne was just part of my genes. However, as an adult, I've been using Peter Thomas Roth Beta Hydroxy Acid 2% Acne Wash and Eucerin Daily Protection Moisturizing Face Lotion with SPF 30. When I wash my face, I do light exfoliation using a wash cloth. I also am sure to wash my face ASAP after a workout and always before going to bed. I *always* moisturize. I also drink at least 8 8-ounce glasses of water a day.. My skin is the best it's ever been. This could be a function of age, my regimen, both, or other unknown factors.
Good luck!0 -
Wash your face with honey.
It's probably one of the things that made the biggest difference in my skin (homemade cold cream being the other thing). I have suffered from horrible skin for a lot of my life then it went away but in the last month or so my face has been really bad again.
I've had honey help my face clear up after only using it 2 or 3 times. It works AMAZINGLY for me.0 -
It really depends on what is causing your acne....is it hormones or is it from makeup/clogged pores, etc. I know for me, I went without it until my late 20's and now I have it really bad. Mine is caused by my hormones, though, so I'm sorry I'm not much help. I have used Proactiv and that worked really well, or you can ask your doctor to write you a prescription for benzoil peroxide that is stronger than what you can get over the counter in the drugstore, that has worked well for me too.
I don't think there is really an easy fix, unfortunately. Good luck!0 -
