Varying Calorie Intake

Many of us tend to eat a regimented diet when we're trying to lose weight - pretty much the same kind of food and the same number of calories every day. But a nutritionist told me we should aim for a weekly AVERAGE of calorie intake rather than the exact same number every day (for example 1000 one day, 1600 another; 1200 another; etc. The average would depend on your BMI and your goal). The idea is supposed to be similar to muscle confusion in exercise. In this case I guess it would be called "calorie confusion." Is anybody familiar with this concept, and more importantly, does anybody know if it works?
