NSV 5k Adventure Race!

I started training 2 months ago for the Groupon I bought on a whim for a local adventure race. As I did my research I realized I didn't sign up for an easy peasy race, as it grew near I wondered if I should even try it and I'm glad I stuck with it. Because this morning was the race, I went alone but I finished with new friends!
After the first obstacle of 4 hill runs back and forth mixed with 5 up/downs in between I thought my heart was going to beat out of my chest. The crowd dwindled but there was about 20 people left with a larger team making up for most of those 20. I jogged to the trail where the team leader invited me to run along with them and am I ever thankful for it!
The race was on the back trails; lunge to the starting line, those damn hills and up/downs, around the bed, down a muddy slope, back up a muddy slope, weave around a bend and 1.5 miles through a dirty river that went up to our chests in some parts, trail along the river, up 100 steps, crab crawl 30 yards, jog around the hilly side and through the bush to the finish.
But, with the help, encouragement and general amazingness of the group I finished alongside them all at 1:21:20.
I plan to join the crazed creator of this race again in October for what looks like an even crazier race where we are "expected to sacrifice to the river gods and bring a change of clothes."
(My "training" has varied as I usually am a up and go do it kind of person. I've walk/jog/ran with my kids 1.5 to 3 miles in the neighborhood, I've joined a kickboxing class at the Y, started weight training and do intervals on the treadmill. I am by no means a fast runner and need breaks but I'm damn proud. I've also been tracking my food, making better choices and I've lost 7 inches so far off the waist, 2 inches in the neck but my hips are happy as they are for now.)
