today i am deciding to get some help for what i think is depression. i am calling a center and setting up an appointment. i am shaking just thinking about it. i just feel like i need help and can't stand feeling this way any more. the weird thing is i am the "happy one" in all of my relationships, but in the last 6 months i have been crying with no reason, snapping at my son and just having wild mood swings. it's driving me crazy because it takes me by surprise then i feel so embarassed for these outbursts.
so i just wanted to talk about it a little. i have never been in this situation and wondered if any of you have gotten benefit from talking to a counselor or being on meds. i don't know what to expect and i'm very nervous, but anything has got to be better than trying to hide these feelings and put on a happy face.
thanks for listening,
Ang

i take meds (citalopram) to help keep my mood stable and my anxiety under control. I have been on these meds for about 5-6m and they are no longer working, so I am making an appt for new meds, but Don't be scared, nor embarrased.. Every one goes thru it at some point, and for some it is temporary, and for others, its permamnent.. Good Luck!0

I got a lot of help in college talking to a counselor after being depressed for nearly 10 years. I took Wellbutrin for a year, and that got my brain mostly back on track. I still have my times when I'm a little down, but it doesn't last months or years anymore.
Congratulations for having the courage to seek out some help. You can definitely message me if you would like to talk.

I had gone through this for years but I was NOT depressed, I was pre-menopause! I felt like I was out of controll sometimes and now when I think back to how I was with my children I am soooo ashamed! Please get your hormone levels checked you may be surprised! I wish you HEALTH and HAPPINESS!0

Good Job on taking this step that is very important for you well-being! It is very scary to take that step and It's great that you recognized the need to do so.
I can relate - the last 2 years have been rough, for a variety of reasons. I started recognizing signs of depression/anxiety last winter, and finally this spring I took the step to start seeing a therapist. It was so scary making that first appointment!! I'm still meeting with her almost weekly, and it is such a big help knowing I have someone who is 'outside' of my life that I can talk to about everything and who can give me ideas and help me get a different perspective on things.
I'm not on any medication, but I realize for some people it does help. Mine issues are mild enough not to warrant it.
I wish you luck and feel free to contact me if you ever want to 'talk' (via messages).

Years ago I had a couple periods of depression, very hard for me, as I am usually the happy one as well. I found that talking to someone and getting on meds until my mood stabilized for awhile really helped. The meds took a month and a half to kick in and I was on them for 6 months to a year. It doesn't have to be a permanent thing, sometimes it helps to just get your chemicals firing the right way again, and that's nothing to be ashamed of! Being on here helps too, because that means you're taking care of your nutrition and body, which are important for good mental health also. Good luck to you, and I hope you get the help you need.0

I'm so glad you're going to go talk to someone about this. Depression isn't something to brush off...and there are many other medical conditions that can actually mimic depression. The only way to be sure what's going on and to get you back to feeling normal again...is going to the doc!
So kudos...

thank you all so much! i am definitely scared, embarassed, anxious and ashamed but i think that going to talk to a professional will help. i hope i can get in this week. right now their phone lines are down so i can't get through!!!!! oh well, every time i dial i am little less nervous :ohwell:
i just want to address this before i do any further damage to myself or my relationships. it seems to be a spiral effect with the mood issues, then food and what not.
i appreciate all of your comments. it really helps to know i'm not alone. i think that is one of the most paralyzing aspects of feeling this way.0 -
