What will happen if you eat too much protein?

I mean like if you go over your daily allowance, even after you have worked out.... What will happen? Will it have bad consequences or will it not make a difference?

Don't worry about it too much. Personally, I think MFP has their default protein goal set too low anyway.0

Going over your daily MFP allowance won't make a difference. In fact, you probably should get more than recommended by MFP.
Too much protein can be bad for your kidneys, but just going over your MFP allowance isn't enough to cause any damage--unless you have a medical problem.0 -
I agree, I think their protein is too low. But I think even lower is their fiber goal! I try to get at least 25g fiber a day, but my goal was set at 14.0

The reality is you will get gas. If you eat too much protein your body will just pass it through your system. I weigh 155 pounds and eat over 200 grams of protein a day with no trouble at all.0

Agreed -- MFP's is mighty low, especially if you're strength training. This is a good calculator for many things, including how much protein to intake daily: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/. The main advice I've gotten is that if you're ingesting a lot of protein is to drink plenty of fluids as too much protein can stress the kidneys. Otherwise -- lots is good!0 -

I spoke to my cousin who is a body builder and owns a supplements store... My allowance on MFP says 53gr... wayy too little. I usually eat over 100gr and haqve reached 150gr on occasion and he said its NOTHING to worry about. Its actually better to get more than what it says on here...0

I'm almost always over in protein but way low in carbs and fat, but I like it that way.0

If you eat to much protein you will be really really full, and if that protein was low fat like turkey breast, boiled chicken or tuna fish you probably wont be able to meet your calorie goals.(which could be a good or bad thing iyo) Thats my experience anyway.0

You will dry up, turn into a pile of dust, and blow away. And a scary man will crawl in your window at 3 am and sodomize your hamster. If you don't have a hamster, you should probably sleep in the closet for the next week.
But no...seriously, extra protein won't kill you. The worst thing that will happen, assuming you don't have an existing metabolic disorder that affects your ability to process proteins, is that you'll feel pretty full and possibly pass a lot of gas. No big deal, especially if you can blame it on that hamster...or your dog, if you want to be all cliche about it.
**Edited to add that even the gas thing doesn't happen to everybody. I've never had any problems with it, but I know my son and my husband both had MAJOR issues with gas for a while when we all started eating high protein. Maybe it's actually just that boys are gross.0 -

How much are you thinking is too much? Unless you're eating crazy amounts (like more than 200 grams a day) I think you'll be okay.0 -
Here's a link to a recent article in Women's Magazine about protein and weight loss. It says women should have .5-1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. If you're trying to lose weight stay on the lower end of the spectrum and if you're active on the higher end. If you're both, then stay in the middle. PRotein here is set WAY to low so I wouldnt worry about it...but as long as you drink plenty of water you should be fine0

Agreed. MFP does give low protein. On a given day before exercise my protein is about 5 or 6 grams below recommended amount. And that's just to maintain muscle mass. So when I go over I don't worry about it. Especially if I'm under in carbs, I would rather be over in protein than in fat!0

I've read that too much protein can be dangerous if you ALREADY have kidney disease. In general, it is HELPS weight loss and blood sugar levels. How much protein a person needs varies from person to person. I'm not sure if there is agreement about setting amounts. Some say make it a percentage of calories eaten and some say it should be a percentage of body weight. Either way MFP's numbers are pretty low and a guideline. I think most of us reset that amount on MFP to suit our own bodies and goals.0

Ok so defo nothing to worry about. Just curious, lately I have been feeling very fatigue. I exercise and burn about 200-500 calories say a day (I try and eat some back)and eat 1200 calories a day. Am I eating way too less, along with too less protein??0

It is near impossible to reach bad levels through diet alone.
The levels that can be bad for you can be reached by the stupid use of suppliments, going way, way, way beyond even the most aggressive recommendations out there (as in several hundred g a day, every day).
You know there is some idiot out there taking megadoses of protein and curling all day so he can get "mad gunz bro." All that protein *might* not be too good for his system in the long run. If you aren't taking protein like this, the adverse health effects of protein is nothing to worry about.0
