How do more calories help you lose weight?

I always thought a good general rule to lose weight was to burn more caloires then you eat. After reading some posts here I see people are saying to eat more to lose more. I dont get it. Some one help me please :)

    You still eat less calories than you burn. That's the only way to lose weight. The eat more to lose more thing is for people who are severely under-eating (netting less than 1200 calories per day in most cases) who are seriously depressing their metabolism due to hormonal responses to severe calorie deficits over prolonged periods of time.
