what happens after you stop breastfeeding???

ok I would like to weed my 11 month old baby but i am scared to gain weight. for those mommy's out there, what was your experince like when you stopped breastfeeding? did you gain weight?

When you wean you obviously won't be burning as many calories. I believe you can burn 500 to 700 a day breast feeding. But you should be eating extra calories right now for breast feeding. So when you stop, just cut out those extra calories. Then you should be fine.0

I'm weaning now. I've reached the point where I'm not giving myself the extra calories. If you don't keep eating the extra 400 calories a day, you will be fine!
Many people drop weight after they wean. The people I know who gained, kept eating more!0 -
I breastfed 3 kids for a full year. I never counted those calories as calories burned either. As long as you exercise and watch your diet you should be just fine0

It also helps that weaning can be a slow process...I don't recommend doing it cold turkey to avoid getting any plugged ducts or mastitis...so you can gradually decrease nursing sessions, which your body will adjust to, and then in turn decrease number of calories you consume.0

I wasn't counting calories and breastfeeding at the same time, so I'm not sure how breastfeeding would have affected my daily calorie goal. But, I did notice that once I stopped breastfeeding, I didn't lose weight as quickly as I did while breastfeeding and I couldn't eat the same amount that was used to while breastfeeding. You will probably have to play around with your daily calorie goal to keep losing weight once you are no longer burning 200-500 calories just to make milk. Good luck!0

From friends of mine that managed to lose or maintain weight while nursing, here's their experience:
Sure, they didn't burn as many calories as they slowed down the breast feeding. OTOH, they also were not as hungry so they consumed fewer calories. The truly successful ones took the time they had previously spent nursing and put it into working out right away.

I didn't gain weight. yes- I burnt far fewer calories, but I was far less hungry. PLUS I was busy chasing babies and toddlers all over tarnation , so stilll burning all those calories.0

I've cut my extra calories from +500 to +125 since I am only nursing my 11 1/2 month old a few times a day. I had stopped adding any extra for a few days and I was WAY hungry, so I'm keeping some extra until he stops nursing completely. Great job being proactive. Better to be mentally and physically prepared. And great job nursing so long.0

Honestly the weaning wasn't a big deal. In the course of a couple weeks it was done. The problem I had was suddenly I was running around trying to feed them "real" food - get them to eat it, clean up the mess, clean up them (again), do more dishes, etc. My nursing 'down time' went away and I was stressing out. Stressing out led to eating whatever fast junk I could get my hands on, which led to 4 years of not handling it well, and 70 pounds of stress weight. Advice? Stock your fridge with accessible veggie trays and hard boiled eggs or other EASY healthy snacks for YOU. If you start to feel stressed out, ask for help. Either get the hubby to help out with kitchen detail, or find someone to sit the kids for even a few hours a week so you can catch up and avoid those feelings of guilt when keeping up is a little more difficult. Don't let the kids become an excuse for putting your personal fitness goals on the back burner. I really dug myself a huge hole to get out of...0

I gained- a lot! But I was also careless with my eating. As long as you're watching what you eat and excercising you should be fine.0

Oh NO.... I lost 15 pounds just from stopping. It was making me hold the weight. I weaned my son at 1year and 1 day, by slowing stopping 1 feeding at a time.0

I am thinking about stopping nursing too. My 6 month old has always been a terrible nurser, he pulls off, doesn't eat enough, or eats too much and spits most of it up. I am going back to teaching in two weeks and am thinking about stopping. I don't want to stop because I enjoy our quiet time together,but I am glad I made it this far!
I think my nursing has prevented me from losing weight. I started eating clean and exercising 30-40mins a day 3months ago and have only lost 6 lbs and am stuck at 160lbs. My normal weight before baby was around 145-150 and I never ate this healthy or exercised this much!0 -
I have the HARDEST time losing weight UNTIL I stop breast feeding! While nursing, I pack on the pounds for some reason. I hate it. I am weaning my 2 year old now and am so excited to be normal again.0

Not much really ... I didn't gain/loose at all once I stopped. As always, just be careful what you eat.0

Nope... I lost about 3 days after. Then my weight loss was easier after that. My body wanted to hold onto my fat while breastfeeding. Everyone’s is different though.0
