My 97 Year old Inspiration

I just came back from visiting my 97 year old Great Grandmother. She is AMAZING and super smart and sassy and funny! I want to be just like her when I grow up! She buried my great grandpa 30 years ago. I know she misses him like crazy but she is so positive. After he died all of the children and grandchildren were so worried that she would just fade away. But she went to a class on living alone and loving it and started hanging out more with her friends and taking her daughters on trips around the country. She lives in Northern Wisconsin and has broken both hips at different times from slipping on the ice. They told her she would never walk without a walker but she was up and moving with a cane two weeks post surgery both times. She has a walker on wheels now, but she mostly just uses it to haul things around. She works out every day by lifting weights, riding her exercise bike that she has had since the late 70's, and using a hand peddler. She loves to play dominos and talk politics, and she is a pretty hip lady. I hope she lives to be 120. My boys who are 4 and 6 just adore her because she just loves to sit and play with them...and the best part is that she gets them. She doesnt care that they are loud and want to touch all of her knick knacks. She banters back and forth with them and plays knock down dominos with them. She loves to have my 70lb six year old sit on her lap (even though it makes the rest of us cringe because he is almost as big as she is!) and talk about the world and all of it's creatures. I am just amazed by this women. I asked her how she manages to be so wonderful and she just laughed at me and told me that she just does the best she can every day to take care of herself and enjoy life. She eats good food and keeps moving and spends a lot of time outside because it makes her happy. So if we follow my Grandma's advice and do the same...perhaps we will be as healthy and active and freaking happy at 97 as she is!

I love this!! I have a 98 year old great-grandmother as well and she tells me the same things. She makes sure to eat well and always move every day. She knows that her legs get stiff when she doesn't exercise, so she goes for her morning walks every day, rain or shine. It's so amazing. Whenever I feel lazy or tired I tell myself that Gram is out there walking, so there's no reason I can't get out there. We are lucky to have our great-grammies around!
