    Thanks for all the input.

Can I ask for some practical suggestions of ways for a middle aged guy to get lean protein into his diet (hoping and praying that there are alternatives to those protein powders I've been reading about).
You and I are close to the same size/age. I have my macros set at 40/30/30 (carbs/protein/fat) because I agree with others that MFP's carbs are too high and protein too low. My calories are set at 2300 and my target for protein every day is 172g, which I almost always manage to hit or exceed (although I do supplement with whey protein shakes when needed). Eat chicken, beef, eggs and/or egg whites, fish, greek yogurt (Chobani's plain yogurt is fairly low in carbs and high in protein), cheese, 1% cottage cheese, milk (if you're a milk drinker), etc. I can't offer any advice on vegetable protein sources, as I rely on them as my fibrous carb intake rather than protein.

You can trade fat for carbs. Go over on the carbs and reduce fat in the same amount, about 1g fat = 2g carbs.
