I have been reading A LOT about hormones/etc. I have been trying to loose weight now for 6 yrs! My story in a nut shell.. I am 5'8 tall 7 yrs ago weighed 145 which was my normal 30s weight...after having my son I can't get the weight off!! I just finished up 13 weeks of P90X and I am eating only whole wheat carbs and lean proteins, veggies, fruit...My husband lost 20 pds he's 47 and I've lost 5 pds in 13 weeks..and very few inches! I've been on MFP forever it seems and each day it says in five weeks you will weigh...not yet??? So after studying a great deal about hormones/hypothroidism..I have all of the symptoms but had my thryoid checked and said it was normal. I want a second opinion; it's the only thing it could be! I live in GA any suggestions on a good Encronologist? Tell me if you have been diagnosed, etc...

    Hi

Well when I was pg with #2 I felt fine but my Dr called me to tell me that my thyroid was low...
Sent me to a specialist and long story short, 1/2 of my thyroid needed to be removed
That was 4 yrs ago and I get my thyroid tested every year and the results always come back normal...I'm not on any meds
I can tell you I feel 10x worse now then when I was diagnosed with thyroid problems
My hair has thinned out terrible, I have trouble sleeping etc etc
I have read on this site (and maybe someone more helpful can chime in) but there are different tests that can be run....
Maybe it's worth seeing a specialist or your gyno (if u have a good one)

I live in SC but I my doctor is in Atlanta. Her name is Victoria Musey she's a professor at Emory as well. The specializes in Thyroid and Diabetes and their related illnesses.

Also if you get your body fat tested you may not need to lose as much weight as you think. My dad's doctor has suggested going by measurements instead of weight.

yes, there are multiple tests for thyroid issues, the basic ones don't really test the thyroid at all, but rather test the resultant levels of certain hormones in the body. Unfortunately these can be normal but you can still have thyroid issues. Most doctors WILL NOT do a complete test unless those numbers are high or low, but you can (and should) demand the full tests be done if you think there is a problem.

That being said, I would like to hear the symptoms that you say all fit. Believe it or not, hypothyroidism is pretty rare (not saying you aren't hypo, but only a small percentage of those who have normal TSH levels (the normal test doctors do) actually have thyroid issues.

The symptoms of hypothyroidism are also common for many many other ailments as well, maybe you do have something, maybe it is Hypothyroidism, but then again maybe it's not. Hard to tell without some more detailed information. You could have nothing more than an unusually high level of stress (which mimics many hypo symptoms and can also deter weight loss as well). It could be as simple as removing stressors from your life and cleaning up the eating a little more.

Do get a second opinion, if nothing else, it would relieve your wondering, and maybe he'll find something the first guy missed. Try to get him to give you a TRH test (they cost a lot, but they are accurate).

    Anyway, Best luck to you.

Well I'm not under any stress thank goodness. I'm a stay at home mom...my symptoms are: very sensitive to cold (in winter months I will start to shiver and can't get warm-most of the time I will have to get in a hot bath to warm up), tiredness, hair loss, muscle cramps, puffy face, heavy periods (sorry you asked).. And i'm working my butt off and eating right! I have studied fitness/nutrition for a long time..I gain and lose the same 3 pds...so frustrating! My husband will tell you how much I do...he doesn't understand it either! He used to train others...I took up running...P90X...now i'm eating more organically...I'm desperate for answers..it's not just about the weight! If so, I would go get some diet pills and call it a day! LOL.. JK..

I was confused for a second, then I realized you replied in my quote. LOL!

OK those symptoms are common to not only hypothyroidism, but to a other issues as well, namely anemia, hypoglycemia, depression, heart murmur or other congenital heart conditions, hypopituitarism, over exercising, lack of sleep, and Diabetes among other things.
once you rule out all the conditions that you can, then you can focus on the others with your doctors.

While I don't doubt it could bey hypothyroidism, these symptoms are relatively general, and could be lots of different things. I hope you figure it out though, sounds like you're having a bit of a rough time. We're here if you need us!

Man I can relate I just got diagnosed this year and it has been an uphill battle. I just keep working out and really trying to be good at night. I crave food and I know some say I don't get enough of something is why but I think the hypothyroid effects your mood, thoughts, feelings and your generally tired to boot. Just make a plan to yourself to at least work out every day and try to stick with your calorie plan and when I do that consistently the weight comes off but my evening mood sometimes sabatoges that so I keep trying. I have kids and visits from family that throws my plans out of wack but I just keep trying.

Measurements are the key not weight but mentally I the scale motivates me too. Hang in there:happy:

Banks.. ok obviously I don't know how to quote and reply..oh yeah another symptom brain fog! LOL! Thank you. I was anemic after having my son and had to take an iron supplement ?? I once took a little test for another work out program I was on and it did come back with chances of hypoglycemia..but now I eat small something every 3 hours? I've been checked for diabetes several times because I have a lot of family history..I'm very careful with sugar/carbs cause I don't want diabetes! I just want someone to listen and know that there truly is a problem..I'm not sitting on the couch eating a bag of chips/candy bar with a coke, etc..I'm not some fat girl wanting an easy way out!!! I move my body a lot and I eat healthy....I just want to see some results..I'm not unrealistic..I know I'm 41 yrs old and I won't weigh 120 pds like I did in high school or 145 in my mid 30s...But I should be able to lose atleast 10-15 pds!! That's realistic especially with the exercise/eating habits I have!!! Thanks for listening and thanks also for helping...Who would you suggest I see? Encronologists? Because I've been to my reg Dr., been to a Hollistic Dr/OB/GYN...??

Thanks IvyKivy- I will look her up!! Thank you! Also, thanks Kimber!

You should get all the hormones checked including TSH, T3, T4 and your projesteron and the female type hormones. You may be surprised if your T3 is off it may not show up on the TSH testing. Good luck

thank you! I went to see a Hollistic Doctor..He took a lot of blood...I paid $600 for that bloodwork...Supposedly he tested everything? I don't know..he was very arrogant and wasn't listening. He told me that I needed to do the South Beach Diet Phase 1 for 2 weeks then move to phase 2 phase 3...I did that...I lost 6 pds..but when I went into phase 2/3 I gained it all back! So I wrote him off as a quack!! LOL...I've been praying so hard to find the right person that can figure this thing out! When you are burning 300-400 cal a day 4-5 times per week and eating 1500-1700 calories a day..hello something should be happening!! I'm sorry guys..I don't mean to keep on about this..I'm just at a breaking point! Thanks for all the comments/help! I won't give up until I figure it out!

Why not go to an actual endocrinologist?

well I knew something was wrong but didn't know what..I wanted to find out the cause/problem and fix that not just bandaid it with meds..so I found a doctor in Atlanta, GA that is a OB/GYN surgeon that practices hollistic medicine...I will now go to a specialist dealing with hormones, etc. now that I truly suspect this is the problem..It's just hard. Most doctors see patients daily that want a quick fix and they are eating badly/ not exercising and they want to throw you in that category too! They think I'm blowing smoke..just frustrating!!!

I agree, a good endocrinologist will put an end to your question of whether it's hypothyroidism or not. Make sure you talk to some people to find a good one though, there are some real quacks out there. My wife had to see four different doctors before she was diagnosed correctly for her sciatic pain (all four had a different diagnosis too, it was almost comical).

If you have a good Primary Care doctor they should be able to search for causes and help you. Low carb may be your answer it is all that works for me healthy low fat and low carb meals and I tend to loose
