For people who have about a stone to lose, how do you do it?

People say strength train, although I have no idea what they mean by this.. Yes I know it's like weights and stuff but like what?
There are machines that do strength training at the gym and then a freeweight section.. Where do I want to be?
Or do you recommend something different all together?

I am using the machines, I do 10 mins warm walking on treadmill 5 mins, Rowing 5 mins, then I go from machine to machine lifting as heavy as I can. 5 sets with 5-8 repitions in each set. There are 7 machines and I also use dumbells, again as heavy as you can for around 45 mins then a 10 - 20 mins cardio session on the stationary bike. You can vary your cardio depending on what you enjoy using. But I would advise keeping your main cardio for after you have done your lifting as you can lift more for longer if you do this.
I am at present lifting between 25 and 45 kgs on the machines depending on which machine I am using. Dumbells are at present 6kgs
I have a back problem so the free weights are a bit difficult for me as you need good form and balance to lift them. However I believe the free weights give you a better all over work out. I am sure someone here can give you some good advice about them..0 -
well I only know what works for me, get out and either cycle or run. cycling fast burns huge amounts of caloires in a fairly short space of time.0

As tadpole242 says running and cycling do burn lots of calories so you could do that type of cardio and also lift weights but again probably best to do them on seperate days.
It is a personal preference for me to do more strength than cardio. I believe that the strength training has helped maintain my muscle mas while I am losing weight.
But you should try all kinds of excercise and find something you enjoy and works for you.0
