Coffee as an appetite suppressant?

I drank an insane amount of iced black coffee with a few Splendas at work yesterday and I didn't want to eat anything at all after I did this. I literally forced myself to eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese after work just so I put something into my system. I can't ever remember being so not-hungry without feeling full before. Normal? Abnormal? Totally stupid?

  • I'd watch that. Maybe not so much coffee and try at least 8 oz water before every meal.

Sometimes, when I drink really sugary and creamed coffees I feel full for a long time, usually cuz I'm bloated!! I wouldn't drink that much every day!

It's because caffeine is a stimulant. Stimulants cause suppression of appetite. Be careful with the Splenda; it would be better if you used a Stevia sweetener like Truvia.

Naw...I do it all the time...you fill up on water(in this case coffee)...your body still needs calories...so as soon as you proccess that ...it will still be hungry and you will fill the need to eat again...kind of a viscous cycle

If it was just that one time I wouldn't worry about it. But I can see what you're saying about not wanting to eat after so much coffee.

It's a lie! I had coffee yesterday and this morning and I'm STARVING! I even had one of those Jimmy Dean sandwhiches!
  • It does that for me sometimes too. But it's a viscious cycle because if you have a ****load of caffeine and then don't eat anything, you will feel like CRAP later on. I'm always like "Yeah, coffee high, and I"m not even hungry, woohooo!" But then a couple of hours later I'm shaky and nauseous. So you should probably force yourself to eat a little something anyway.

BEcause I drink coffee, I usually hold off to eat a later breakfast, if I can help it. I would drink coffee right after my breakfast and then halfway through the morning, I would be hungry and sugar dropped. Now, I drink my coffee first thing, because I need that jump of caffiene (for now) and then, I eat my breakfast, usually cereal, a bit later in the AM. Then by lunchtime, i am ready for lunch. OF COURSE, I gotta keep drinking my water after breakfast too.

If you space your coffee throughout the day then yes it will act as a suppressant. The down side to that is your body is not getting real food so it will start storing fat. I eat first now before I have my coffee. Although on the days were I have no appetite first thing in the morning I will just have my coffee. thankfully that doesn't happen often.

sometimes i get really REALLY hungry, but dinner won't be ready for an hour, or an hour and a half. i can't wait, so i have a coffee. holds me long enough to get to dinner, for about 12-15 calories.

    This^

I'm a coffee freak; look at my food diary. I have it with just cream usually, and occasionally add one quarter of a teaspoon of raw honey in 12 ounces. I don't use artificial sweeteners and even have reservations about processed stevia extracts. For extra filling factor and good health, try Bulletproof coffee (in mine I put 12 oz coffee, 1tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp unsalted butter, dash of cinnamon (optional) blend or shake). It is a meal replacement, and it's delicious! It even tastes a little sweet.

There are better Bulletproof coffee recipes that recommend more coconut oil and butter, but I limit myself because I drink so much coffee. COFFEE, YUM... and yes, I have a reduced appetite but I think it's because I eat a diet high in fat, rather than the caffeine; since I was drinking as much or more coffee before I started losing weight.

Well yeah, I kinda figured it had something to do with the caffeine. However, before I jumped back on board with MFP I had tons of caffeine and was still hungry all day. Like I said, yesterday was just a new experience. Usually coffee for me used to mean some kind of frappucino from Starbucks with tons of sugar and fat and other undesirables.

I can drink coffee at 10pm at night and be asleep at 10:30. I love it and it has no effect on me sleep wise. =)

Coffee is delicious? You might have conditioned yourself over the years. Acidic and bitter does not equal delicious.

Green tea over coffee for health benefits. Finding an alternative for appetite suppression that is caffeine free could be helpful for people that are caffeine sensitive or have issues sleeping after consumption.

When I drink coffee, I usually have it with my breakfast. I find that I usually don't feel the need for a morning snack or early lunch. I tend to feel more peckish in the mornings if I don't have the coffee.

I LOVE coffee, so i drink usually during the summer 2-3 cups a day. I try to drink it when i really want a snack, and i think it works!!! im going to have another cup now...i think it's worth a try, and if you make it at home, and not get it from a coffeshop, its usually only about 10 calories a cup. It's worth a shot!(: my favorite brand is either Eight O'Clock, or Dunkin Donuts, in the flavor french vanilla. I get mine at Kroger, or any grocery store(:

I think it's an easier taste to acquire than apple cide vinegar:smile:
I think green tea has caffeine as well?

Coffee has been shown to prevent and/or treat type 2 diabetes, prostrate cancer, depression, and Parkinsons's. I don't know that the studies for green tea are as strong. Not to say that there are no benefits to green tea but I doubt that one can say that green tea is better using existing scientific research.

Of course, if one has senstitvites to a substance, most benefits are nullified.

Anyone ever try coffee before a workout? It never fails to give me a better pump and gives me extra oomph for those days when I may be dragging a lotta bit.
