Is it REALLY that strange?

When you come across someone who's lost a bunch of weight since the last time you saw them, what is your immediate thought?
I saw a few ppl this weekend whom I haven't seen in forever. Their immediate response was along the lines of: Oh my god! What happened to you? Have you been sick? You look so weak... Hey _______! Look at Amber, she looks so skinny she must have been sick. I even said, "NO i was not sick, i did this on purpose" but they couldn't hear me over their own assumptions. I wasn't hoping for any commentary nor was I expecting it- so when I got negative responses I really felt bad.
Just to clarify, I do NOT look sick. I've just lost weight. What I don't understand is WHY is it so strange for ppl to see me not fat/chubby anymore? Did they think I was lazy or had no willpower? Did they think I was complacent in my fattness and would remain this way forever? I'm only 27 why would they assume I just gave up on myself? Why would you assume that about anyone? When I have see ppl who've dropped a bunch of weight my immediate response is " Wow! Congratts"
For some reason this made me feel crappy. I know I shouldn't but I do. Some people!!!! :grumble:

how much weight did you lose? People can be rude some times. Maybe they are jealous? are they bigger themselves? Don't let it get to you!0

Yes that is aggravating...in my small town it usually goes like this. " Wow you have lost weight~ you look great!" Then as soon as you leave...."She must be having an affair!" People are just jealous that they do not have the will power to do it themselves I think. Good for you!0

Thank you!!
So far 25 lbs, but I still have a thick mid section (post baby pooch) I am by no means skinny or anywhere near it.
I'm trying not to let it get to me! But now i cant help but wonder if everyone is thinking that about me. It sucks because I've worked VERY hard for this and for ppl to bypass it as "illness" is demeaning to my efforts. :ohwell:0 -
I don't get the "you look sick", but I do get the "Ain't no way he lost all that weight on his own!!" the "did you have lipo or the gastric bypass" or what kind of pills are you taking to lose all that weight that fast? I've also gotten "Do you do weight watchers or Nutri system?" To all of them I have to say No, no, no, no...then they just go behind my back and accuse me of it.
It's all G though...I take it how it come then do it how it go...I know what I've accomplished.0 -
Sorry to hear that:explode:
People I know have been very supportive; I get the occasional "did you have surgery?" or "what pill are you taking?" It's flattering to know how much time a person will waste on judging your appearance :drinker:0 -
Well the first thing I took from this is now I know your first name . You do not look sick at all but you had been fasting so that may have taken away the healthy eating and exercise glow. More likely they are jealous. And lastly some people are just flat out rude hopefully you don't have to see them for a long time again.0

so many just dont want to believe that 'diet and exercise' ARE the magic words. they want hocus pocus all the way- wave a wand, swallow a pill. I have seen quite a few folks wave me off like Im telling a fairy tale if I say portion control, watching what I eat in more ways than one, together with exercise is working. some just refuse to listen or believe. Congrats by the way- I admire your determination.0

Unfortunately, sometimes people don't realize that what they say can be hurtful. You do not look sick, you look healthy and are well on your way to a lasting healthy lifestyle. People really should choose their words more carefully, and should follow by your example.0

@newmoon
Yessssss!!!! It drives me nuts to see co-workers trying to lose weight by using pills or whatever. Do the work and you'll see results! lol0 -
I had a guy at work ask if I was losing weight on purpose and when I said yes he asked if I "had a little something going on the side" he knows I'm married. That same week a woman I work with asked how much I lost ,I said 21lbs her response "that's not good" she then had to remind me that hen I was out of work for a few months I had gained weight. I just don't get what goes through people's heads.0

When Alton Brown (from the Food Network) lost a ton of weight (50 pounds) everyone thought he was sick. More personally, when I lost weight a few years ago, everyone at work thought I was sick but everyone at home thought I could stand to lose more weight. Who cares what other people think?0

I agree with what most people have said on here. You'll hear people's opinions even if you are at your ideal weight. My sister lost a ton of weight when she did some people would say you're too skinny and in the same day people would say you're still have a couple of pounds to go. Just find a body range that you feel the healthiest at. And when people say something smile and say, "well thanks for your concern, but right now I have feel the healthiest I've felt in my entire life." Its polite, honest, and yet still telling them to mind their business.0

Same here! This is what I tell everyone that will listen! The magic is portion control! And if you think that I don't struggle EVERY day, you are sorely mistaken! It's a struggle every day. Luckily, I haven't had anyone ask me if I was sick. I lost about a pound a week for a year. But it was like about 2 months ago, everyone at work noticed and was like wow! What did you do!
BTW -- keep doing what you are doing and don't worry about what other people say!!0
