How much should you lose?

When I started at MFP in Jun 2012, I chose a target of "lose 1 lb per week" because it was "recommended". I am doing all right and am indeed losing 1 lb every week.

Now a friend of mine went to some gym which promised him a lot. A month later he lost about 13 lbs! ie 3 lbs a week. That was fantastic.

Then I looked at MFP success stories and found most people lose a lot more than a pound a week.

What I wanted to know is whether a pound a week is a sissy target or is it respectable? If it is a sissy target, why is it marked as "recommended" in the GOALS section of the site? The confusion on my part is because I have done an internet search and found some sites saying "go slow" and other sites saying "go fast".

Does anyone here know what the actual situation is - how fast/slow should one go?

If you want to lose it and keep it off 1 lb a week is best. Lose too quickly you are shocking your body, not really learning anything and going back to old ways.
