Thinking of having occasional one-day fasts to cleanse the system. Any experience or tips to share?

    It doesnt cleanse anything.

Personally I enjoy daily fasts from 10pm to 2pm.

If I do a 24hour fast its probably after a super binge of about 4k-5k cals.
Just keep in mind that its a good idea to heighten the other calories throughout the week.

I do occasionally fast. Some are holy days that I celebrate.. Other times are when I feel I need a mental and physical "reset". It's funny you are asking this question because someone was just asking me about the same thing. Some would think that after fasting you would want to go straight to BK for a whopper. It really is just the opposite. I will wake up in the morning wanting plain oatmeal, or egg whites. Just make sure you listen to your body. If you start getting light headed or feeling funny, don't be stubborn and don't eat.

There is a thread on one day or intermittent fasting. However, I do not see a huge benefit from a 1 day fast. From what I understand, people fast because they want to regain health or to "reset" their taste buds, among other reasons. But lets look at fasting.

Fasting depletes your blood sugar and then in about 72 hours or 3 days, your glycogen. When this happens, your body switches from using carbs as a fuel source to fat. Yes, you are in a state of ketosis but there is a difference between a water only fast and a low carb diet.

A water only fast will cleanse out all the bad "stuff" and your organs get a chance to start healing. This doesn't happen on a 1 day fast because your body is still using up the blood sugars and glycogen.

A low carb diet means you are eating fat and meat and anything that is not high in carbs. You are not allowing your body to heal as it still has to process foods.

I would look into Dr. Klapper's DVD on Fasting to learn more. I bought it and I am really happy I did. Make sure you consult a doctor if you are on medication before fasting. And get a doctor that understands.

    Good luck.

    Thanks everyone!

    - I am indeed considering a fast because of a big binge day.
    - Agree that water vs carb fast - many thanks for the recommendation re Dr Klapper!
    - Don't expect major benefit from a day but it would be a good re-set at least mentally

I am against starving and I definitely do not intend to use the "fast day" as a way to starve and ignore my body. When I eat well and move a lot, I lose weight, simple equation :) I just need a bit of mental cleansing..and physical too whatever a day can help even just to ease the digestive system after a major binge :)

Good luck! Let me know how it goes please. I am always interested in what people do or feel during a fast.
