Hey all! I just wanted to share a product that I'm in love with and an idea for packing salads for lunch.

Years ago, I discovered I really liked my salads SHAKEN not STIRRED, yes, I'm so very BOND like. We'll call this topic "Salad 007" :glasses: LOL.

Do you remember when McDonald's had those salad shakers you could order thru drive-thru, pour dressing in, snap on the lid and shake to mix? Well, I learned that it distributed the dressing much better and you used far less.

Recently on an episode of Dr. Oz (SHUT UP all you HATERS! Don't even start in. For God's sake, the man is a cardiologist and while he may hype some products and while he may not be a nutritionist... that doesn't mean he can't have a good idea or bring on a guest expert every now and then with some helpful insights - so let's make this topic ABOUT THE SALADS and not your personal issues re Dr. Oz. Seriously, any of you attempt to hijack this thread for your Dr. Oz petty vendettas - you will be reported as trolls. Let it go!)....

So, as I was saying, on a recent episode, he was also recommending "shaken" salads as a way to lessen the amount of dressing you use. He was using a similar container to the one that I use. And that made me think, maybe I should post and share what I use...

There are these AWESOMETASTIC containers by Glad that are big enough for a truly decent sized salad with all kinds of fixins. And, they have a separate tiny cup that will hold UP TO 2 tbs of dressing in them and they snap inside the container to the underside of the lid. So the salad doesn't get mushy but you have everything right there convenient for your travel lunch. (I do believe they are BPA free too, I think)

Anyway, I love them and I've found I can make up salads a couple days in advance and all the ingredients stay fresh and ready to go. I have also found that with the shake method, I often don't need more than 1 or 1.5 tbs of dressing. It really does make you use less and everything gets coated. You pour it on, put the lid back on and shake till fully distributed.

Here's a link to the the containers I use: http://www.glad.com/products/food-storage/containers/glad-to-go-lunch/

Do any of you make "shaken" salads? If so, what containers do you use? Also, please feel free to share any recipe ideas to make salads more interesting. What kinds of ingredients do you like to add to your salads?

I do this with quart mason jars. I layer all the ingredients with the dressing on the bottom and shake up when I'm ready to eat it!

Don't the bottom ingredients resting on the dressing get "soggy"? Have you ever tried to make up a day or two in advance? Sounds handy, so I'm interested to know more.

I put cucumber chunks in the bottom so they kind of marinate in the dressing and prop up the other ingredients so they don't get soggy.
  • Thanks so much for the helpful tip.
