So my fiance is looking to get me an eliptical for christmas :happy: What are the good brands/models and the ones to stay away from?

    I don't really have any advice for or against a certain brand, but my advice is to look on amazon.com and read the user reviews of any that you might be interested. I read reviews on amazon before I buy almost anything. :laugh:

    i don't know any brand names, but I would definitely get one that also requires you to work your arms out. the ones with the stationary handhold give you half the workout (not only do you not move your arms back and forth, but you don't use as many stabilizing muscles to stay upright).

    The highest rated elliptical in my price range (below $1500) is the Sole E35. The Diamondback 1260 Ef is the top rated model but it's twice as much denero. Some of these ellipticals are 80" - 100" long and weigh a couple hundred pounds.

    I just purchased the Lifecore LC985VG because of its smaller footprint (limited space in my workout room). It has not been delivered so I can't give you a personalized critique yet.

    I have to plug consumerreports.org of which I'm a member. They do a great job of rating consumer items and they're usually spot on: Doesn't cost much to join!

    We have a Nautilus at work and it's great! I think we purchased it used, so it has a little rust on the bottom from sweat, LOL, but that just means it is working. :wink:

    It has a heart rate monitor which is accurate within 50 or so calories, but I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend getting a heart rate monitor to wear if you don't have one! Best $100 I have ever spent, honestly.

    But, if money is an issue (and it definitely is, at least for me, at this current time!), I am sure that Wal-Mart has some great - and cheap! - elliptical machines. :smile: They have some nice Gold's Gym stuff - not sure if they have an elliptical, though.

    I have the Schwinn 430 and it is wonderful for only around $600. Very smooth and very quiet and it takes up very little room. Check out this website that rates ellipticals: http://www.allellipticals.com/elliptical-trainer-comparison-chart-2.html
