Juice...

So I came down with a bad cold early yesterday. I've always flushed my colds out quickly by taking large doses of Vitamin C. Now, one of the easiest ways to get extra C is to drink juice! I gave up juice about 8 months ago because it's so high in sugar, carbs and cals. Drinking one container (16 ozs) gives me 220 calories in one sitting. So my question is this: obviously I'm factoring the juice into my daily calorie intake but just drinking a few classes of juice is going to set me back about 500 calories for the day and not fill me up :grumble: : should I worry too much about this putting me over my daily intake??? Thoughts, suggestions, ideas?

I agree, I use C to flush out my colds too, but juice is just so high in calories. This season I have been using Airborne and Emergen C. They are both super easy to use (just mix w/water), taste good and only have 20 calories. They also have a whole list of vitamins and minerals that you wouldn't normally get by just drinking juice. Hope you feel better soon!

I normally take lots of C tablets but my tonsils get sooooo swollen that I'd rather just have something to drink! I've never cared for the taste of the Airborne and Emergen C but looks like it's definitely smarter than juice. I didn't know they were that much lower in calories! Thanks :flowerforyou:
  • As mentioned before Emergen-C works great! You add it to water and it contains such good vitamins and lots of vitamin C. Whenever I feel a cold coming on I take one in the morning, middle of the day and evening and I am good to go :-)

You can always take a supplement....or eat an actual orange. You will not only get vitamin C but you will get fiber and other nutrients as well. Just as a side note, they say that the "frozen concentrate" contains up to 3x's more vitamin C than the carton type of juice (something to do with the pasturization process).

In addition, you can get a great deal of vitamin C from honeydew, cantelope, strawberries, brussel sprouts, and green peppers.

    Hope you feel better!!!!

I typically stay away from juice...except when I'm sick. When trying to get better my main goal is staying hydrated and giving the body what it needs to heal. So I drink tons of OJ when I'm sick. Once I'm better...the juice gets the old heave ho!

Thanks for the mention of other fruits and veggies high in C! I'll be eating some of that today. :flowerforyou:

I think I won't beat myself up for drinking healthy juice to fight off a cold. But I will be picking up some of the Emergen C or Airborne to keep on hand, especially if this things doesn't go away soon!
  • I think tropicana has low calorie juices, and i know that cranberry juice is 35 calories for 8 fl oz. Taking zinc and vitamin c suppliments also wards away bad colds.

Fruit juices are so good for you, if you get 100% juice no sugar added that is. Sometimes it can count as a fruit serving, and i believe that is ok if its a big calorie hefty, because its just like eating a banana or a big apple.

Alternately, you could eat oranges and avoid the sugar spikes associated with juice. Man, I love (and miss) OJ...I think if I were sick and wanted it, I would probably have my OJ and not worry too much about the cals + sugar.

It's not the calories you have to worry about, it's the sugar minus the fiber.

I'll definitely look into the Tropicana-I didn't know that they made anything low calorie! I'm taking about 8000mg of C and about 100mg of zinc right now. I've just noticed that taking as much C as I can stomach really gets rid of the cold in 3-5 days, so drinking juice is a nice way to get in more!

 I LOVE juice. That was the hardest thing for me to give up, other than chocolate. I used to always reach for OJ when I was sick; glad to know there is someone that is the same way! I think I'll have my juice and not worry!v :drinker:
