Overview

In the paperback edition of this New York Times bestseller, Cardiologist Dr. William Davis explains how eliminating wheat from our diets can prevent fat storage, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse myriad health problems.

Over 200 million Americans consume food products made of wheat every day. As a result, over 100 million experience some form of adverse health effect, ranging from minor rashes to high blood sugar to unattractive stomach bulges preventative cardiologist William Davis calls "wheat bellies." According to Davis, that excess fat has nothing to do with gluttony, sloth, or too much butter: it’s due to the whole grain wraps we eat for lunch.

After witnessing over 2000 patients regain health after giving up wheat, Davis reached the disturbing conclusion that wheat is the single largest contributor to the nationwide obesity epidemic—and that elimination of wheat is key to dramatic weight loss and optimal health. In Wheat Belly, Davis exposes the harmful effects of what is actually a product of genetic tinkering and agribusiness being sold to the American public as "wheat"—and provides readers with a user-friendly, step-by-step plan to navigate a new wheat-free lifestyle.

Informed by cutting-edge science and nutrition, along with case studies from men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in health after waving goodbye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at what is truly making Americans sick and an action plan to clear our plates of this seemingly benign ingredient.

I'm just going to simply point out that human beings have been cultivating and eating wheat for thousands and thousands of years.

The obesity issue is only about two decades old.

I know lots of people who have eliminated wheat and found it aids weight loss, reduces bloating/bowel problems and fatigue. In fact my mum has found that removing wheat has helped her Multiple Sclerosis symptoms (less migraines, increased energy levels).
I do question whether this is due to removing the actual wheat or simply because people who go wheat-free cut out the carb-heavy over-processed sugary foods which contain wheat (cakes, biscuits, cookies, pastries, rolls, mass-produced bread).

This is what I always wonder too. When people say they are cutting out wheat, were they making their own bread? Or are they cutting out the bread with preservatives that they bought in the store?

It could also be that some people do have a sensitivity to it. If you have a sensitivity to something and you cut it out, you'll feel better. But not everyone will have that experience.

I don't notice a difference if I eat wheat or I don't, but I'm not sensitive to it. I do have issues with milk and cow-milk yogurt, though.

I think a lot of the time it ISN'T because of a sensitivity, it's because going wheat-free leads to general diet improvements. If you eat less cake, biscuits, pastry etc you lose weight and feel better.

(obviously some people are allergic, but I think not as many people are allergic as *think* they are - my own mother included!)
