question about gout

Wasn't really sure which section to ask this question in, so excuse me if it seems the wrong forum board for this.

I have had gout before and the doctor prescribed naprosan, a drug to get rid of the uric acid crystal causing the pain. But as there is a 2 week waiting list to see a doctor where I am I was wondering for any natural remedies that could offer relief.

I have been reading about baking soda and was considering taking half a teaspoon in about a litre of water, but have read some positive and negative opinions on this.

I currently drink 2 litres of water a day without fail but have still got these awful pains in my left foot, similar to last time when I got diagnosed.

Anyone have any input on the baking soda idea?

Many thanks

Standard "I'm not a doctor" disclaimer....

Have you tried Aleve? It's the same active ingredient as Naprosyn/Naproxen, but available over the counter.

No I have never heard of it. Is it something that would be available in Australia do you think?
  • Hey Aliceguy,

I know your pain.... I have lived with gout for over 10 years and it has been a major hurdle in loosing weight.
I found the best medication after visiting a specialist.
    I am on
    zyloprim 600 mg
    Colchicine 1000 micrograms.

When I have an attack I start with prednisone ( this is a very strong steroid an only to be used vita doctors avice) and do not use for more than 4 days( it usually clears in a day or 2 )

I have tried the low carb diets but these only bring on gout and make it very intense..

Losing weight rapidly also brings it on... I have found loosing weight no faster than 1.5-2 pounds per week works great, any faster nd I feel a tingle in my toes!!!!!!!!!

Have been using my fitness pal for 4 weeks and lost 11 pounds and feeling great..

    I hope this helps

    Rob

    Not sure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naproxen

Wiki says, "In Australia, packets of 275-mg tablets of naproxen sodium are Schedule 2 pharmacy medicines, with a maximum daily dose of 5 tablets or 1375 mg." But I have no clue what that means.

If there's a wait for the doctor and you've been seen for it before, they may be able to call in a prescription without an office visit.

I read a lot about "Cherry Active" helping people with gout. I personally take it on a daily basis, it helps with my sore muscles after a workout. I also had an inflammation in my digestive system, which cleared up after I took it regularly. Good luck and all the best.

I am pretty sure schedule 2 means I can get it from a chemist without a prescription from a witch doctor....thanks for that, I will try tomorrow!

My bf has gout and struggles all the time....water is huge but it sounds like you have that covered....some triggers for him are....fatty foods, alcohol, beans, spinach, heavy doses of meat even if its low fat.....so you might want to see if cutting some of these out help you....hope you feel better soon:)
